Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

The photograph changed everything.

Emma stared at the young woman.

"Who is she?"

Daniel whispered her name.

"Eleanor Hale."

Sarah nodded.

"She is Lily's biological grandmother."

Emma looked at Daniel.

"Your family knew?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Since before Lily was born."

Emma felt betrayed.

She had spent six years believing Lily's family history was simple.

Now every answer opened another question.

"Where is Eleanor?"

Sarah hesitated.

"She's been trying to contact you."

Emma's heart stopped.

"Why didn't I know?"

"Your husband intercepted several letters."

Daniel looked devastated.

"I thought I was protecting you."

Emma turned toward him.

"You keep using that word."

"I know."

"You don't know what it means."

Daniel lowered his head.

Sarah opened another folder.

Inside were copies of letters.

Each one had been addressed to Emma.

Each one had never reached her.

The first letter was dated three years earlier.

The second was dated two years earlier.

The last was only six months old.

Emma read the final sentence.

I know what they did.

And I know Lily deserves the truth.

Emma's hands trembled.

"Where is she now?"

Sarah gave her an address.

"About two hours away."

Emma looked toward Lily.

The little girl was coloring at the kitchen table.

Emma realized she couldn't keep living inside someone else's lie.

She stood.

"We're going."

Daniel looked surprised.

"Emma."

She turned.

"You can come if you want."

"But?"

"You don't get to speak for me anymore."

Daniel nodded.

The drive was quiet.

When they arrived, Eleanor was waiting on the porch.

She was an older woman with silver hair and tired eyes.

The moment she saw Lily, she began to cry.

Lily looked at Emma.

"Mommy, who is she?"

Emma knelt beside her daughter.

"Someone who has been waiting a very long time to meet you."

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Then she whispered:

"My granddaughter."

May you like

Emma held Lily's hand.

And for the first time, the truth stood directly in front of them.
