Chapter 17 - THE LETTER
Emma stared at the envelope.
She didn't open it.
She gave it to the investigator.
The letter was examined before anyone touched it.
Inside was a short message.
Margaret claimed she had acted out of fear.
She said Daniel's father had manipulated everyone.
She said she had only wanted to protect the family.
Emma didn't believe her.
But one sentence caught her attention.
I know something about Lily that you still don't know.
Emma's stomach tightened.
She called Sarah.
"What does this mean?"
Sarah read the letter.
"We don't know."
"Could it be another lie?"
"Absolutely."
"But?"
Sarah looked at her.
"It could also be important."
They returned to the hospital.
The records department reviewed the original files again.
This time, they discovered something hidden inside a secondary archive.
A photograph.
It showed two newborn babies.
One was Lily.
The other was the child connected to the hospital error.
The photograph had been taken before the records were changed.
Emma stared at it.
"Who is the other baby?"
The hospital administrator looked at the identification number.
"We still don't have a confirmed name."
Sarah checked the old adoption records.
Then she froze.
The number matched a person who was now an adult.
Emma asked:
"Where is she?"
Sarah looked at her.
"She's here."
Emma turned.
A woman stood outside the records office.
She had brown hair.
Green eyes.
And a familiar expression.
Emma stared at her.
The woman stared back.
Neither spoke.
Then the woman whispered:
"Lily?"
Emma's heart stopped.
The woman continued.
"I've been looking for my sister for years."
Emma suddenly understood.
