Chapter 18 - TWO SISTERS

Her name was Claire.
She was twenty-four years old.
She had spent years trying to understand why her adoption records didn't match the information she had been given.
When she discovered the hospital identification number, she began searching.
She never expected to find Lily.
Emma invited her home.
Lily watched Claire carefully.
"Who is she?"
Emma knelt beside her.
"This is Claire."
Claire smiled.
"Hi, Lily."
Lily looked at her.
"Do I know you?"
Claire laughed softly.
"Not yet."
That answer made Lily smile.
They spent the afternoon talking.
Claire showed Lily old photographs.
Emma noticed something remarkable.
Claire and Lily had the same smile.
The same small crease beside their eyes.
The same habit of tilting their heads when confused.
It wasn't proof by itself.
But DNA testing later confirmed what the records suggested.
They were sisters.
Emma cried when she received the results.
Not because the truth was painful.
Because it finally made sense.
The hospital mistake had separated two families.
Daniel's father had discovered it.
Instead of correcting the situation, he had exploited it.
The trust had belonged to both children.
The money had never been the real story.
The real story was two children who had grown up without knowing each other.
Lily sat beside Claire on the couch.
"Can you come back tomorrow?"
Claire smiled.
"Absolutely."
Emma watched them.
For the first time, the secret that had destroyed her family was creating something new.
A family built on truth.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
Emma looked at him.
He smiled.
She smiled back.
It wasn't forgiveness.

Not yet.
But it was a beginning.
