Chapter 1: The Containment

The silence in the Hawthorne Museum was absolute.

Every eye was locked on me. The shattered crystal on the marble floor lay between Grant Holloway and myself like a drawn line in the sand. He stared at the jagged shards, then slowly lifted his gaze to the men in tactical black uniforms who had just stepped from the hidden alcoves.

“You’re insane,” Grant whispered. The swagger was gone. His voice trembled, stripped of its generational arrogance.

“No, Grant,” I replied, my voice steady, carrying clearly across the grand gallery. “I am thorough.”

I gestured to the head of my security detail, a towering former Ranger named Vance. He didn't blink as he stepped forward, a high-definition body camera glowing with a steady red recording light on his chest.

“Ms. Vale,” Vance said, his voice deep and calm. “Perimeter is secure. Total lockdown achieved. All comms jamming is in effect. Nothing goes out of this building unless you authorize it.”

Panic finally breached the dam.

“You can’t hold us here!” shouted Senator Hastings, a man who had been laughing at my humiliation just three minutes earlier. His face was flushed crimson. “This is kidnapping! I have a direct line to the governor!”

“You have a dead piece of plastic in your pocket, Senator,” I corrected him without looking away from Grant. “And I’d advise you to sit down. You are trespassing on private property, and my security team is fully authorized to detain anyone who poses a threat.”

Grant’s chest heaved. He lunged toward me, his fist raised. “You think you can—!”

He didn't make it two steps.

Vance moved with terrifying speed. In a blur of motion, Grant was face-first on the cold marble, his arm twisted painfully behind his back. The sickening thud of his designer suit hitting the floor echoed through the room.

“Stay down,” Vance warned.

I looked down at the man who had assaulted me. “The rules have changed, Grant. Welcome to my house.”
