Chapter 4: The Senator's Bargain

Senator Hastings pushed his way to the front of the crowd. His political career was flashing before his eyes.

“Ms. Vale,” Hastings said, his voice trembling as he tried to adopt a diplomatic tone. “Mara. Let’s be reasonable. There is a way to handle this quietly. We can make you richer than you ever imagined. Name your price.”

I looked at him in disgust. “My grandfather founded Vale Industries with integrity. Your people destroyed him. You fabricated fraud charges, bankrupted him, and drove him to an early grave, all so the Holloways could absorb his assets.”

I stepped closer to the Senator.

“My price was paid ten years ago when I buried him. Tonight is about the refund.”

I pulled a small tablet from my clutch and tapped the screen. The main projection shifted to a video feed. It showed the exterior of the museum. The streets were swarming with black SUVs. Not police. Private security.

“It seems Richard Holloway has realized his son is trapped,” I announced.

On the screen, dozens of armed mercenaries in tactical gear poured out of the vehicles, establishing a perimeter around the museum’s steel-shuttered doors.

Grant let out a desperate, barking laugh. “I told you! My father is here. You’re finished, Mara. Open the doors now, and maybe I’ll tell them to let you live.”

I didn't flinch. I just looked at Vance.

“Are the exterior defenses holding?” I asked.

Vance tapped his earpiece. “Four inches of reinforced titanium on every exit. They could hit the front door with a tank and it wouldn’t scratch the paint.”

I turned back to Grant, whose smile was rapidly fading.

“Your father isn't here to save you, Grant,” I said quietly. “He’s here to destroy the evidence. And unfortunately for you... you are the evidence.”
