Chapter 13: Clearing the Stage
By noon, the museum was completely empty of guests.
The FBI had transitioned from tactical clearing to crime scene processing. Yellow tape crisscrossed the beautiful marble columns. Forensic accountants were hauling servers out of the back offices.
Vance walked up to me, handing me a fresh ice pack.
“Thank you, Vance,” I said, pressing it to my face.
“The exterior is clear, Ms. Vale. Your car is waiting out back. The press is swarming the front, but we have a secure route.”
I looked around the grand gallery. It looked exactly as it had the day my grandfather first brought me here as a little girl, before the Holloways stole it from him. The ancient statues stood tall. The light filtered beautifully through the glass ceiling.

“Did we get everything out of the control room?” I asked.
“Wiped clean. No trace of your cyber-intrusion into the Holloway’s private servers before the purchase. As far as the feds know, you bought the company and stumbled upon a crime ring.”

I smiled. “Perfect.”
I turned and began to walk toward the exit, my heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.
