Chapter 14: The Statement
As I stepped out of the rear exit, the cool afternoon air hit my face. A sleek black town car was idling in the alleyway.
Before I could get in, a lone reporter who had managed to bypass the police barricade shoved a microphone in my face.
“Ms. Vale! Ms. Vale! The entire city is in shock. The Holloway family is ruined. Dozens of politicians are in federal custody. What do you have to say about the events of last night?”
Vance stepped forward to push the reporter away, but I held up my hand.
I looked directly into the camera lens. I made sure they could see the bruise on my face, the torn strap of my silver gown, and the absolute, unbreakable calm in my eyes.

“Let this be a reminder,” I said, my voice steady and clear. “Power is an illusion. Arrogance is a weakness. And if you build your empire on the suffering of others, eventually, someone is going to burn it to the ground.”
