Chapter 10 - The Countdown01:59.

The glowing red numbers dominated every monitor inside the underground boardroom.
For one frozen second, no one moved.
Then Daniel Carter's voice shattered the silence.
"Everyone, move! Leave the evidence if you have to. Lives come first!"
The tactical team sprang into action.
SWAT officers grabbed Emily and William, guiding them toward the exit while FBI technicians hurriedly disconnected hard drives from the servers.
One technician hesitated.
"Commander, these servers contain decades of evidence!"
Daniel didn't slow down.
"If this place collapses, evidence won't matter if we're buried with it."
The countdown continued.
01:43.
Emergency alarms began echoing throughout the underground complex.
But something felt wrong.
There was no smoke.
No smell of explosives.
No vibration beneath the floor.
Daniel noticed immediately.
"This doesn't feel like a demolition."
Thomas Bennett glanced back at the blinking monitors.
"Eleanor never wastes resources."
Emily frowned.
"You think it's a bluff?"
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
"I think we're misunderstanding what the countdown means."
Two corridors away, an FBI bomb technician scanned the walls with a thermal camera.
"Commander."
Daniel stopped.
"What did you find?"
"No explosives."
He checked another section.
"Nothing here either."
Daniel frowned.
"Keep searching."
The technician nodded.
"But I don't think she's trying to blow up the building."
Far from the mansion, inside a sleek penthouse overlooking the city skyline, Dr. Eleanor Graves calmly watched dozens of live security feeds.
Each screen displayed a different camera angle inside the underground facility.
She sipped tea as if watching an ordinary business meeting.
Beside her stood Victoria Hawthorne.
Victoria stared silently at the monitors.
Finally she spoke.
"They found everything."
Eleanor smiled faintly.
"No."
"They found what I wanted them to find."
Victoria turned toward her.
"You planned this?"
Eleanor didn't answer directly.
Instead, she asked,
"Tell me, Victoria..."
"What happens when investigators become obsessed with yesterday?"
Victoria frowned.
"They stop looking at today."
Eleanor nodded.
"Exactly."
Back underground...
The countdown reached one minute.
00:59
Emily suddenly stopped.
"Wait."
Daniel looked back.
"We don't have time."
She pointed toward one of the conference room monitors.
"Eleanor said she was inviting us."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"So?"
"If she wanted us dead..."
"...why warn us with a countdown?"
Thomas immediately understood.
"Rebecca used to say the same thing."
Daniel looked between them.
"What are you talking about?"
Thomas answered,
"Eleanor never announces an attack."
"She announces a decision."
The countdown reached thirty seconds.
Every electronic device inside the complex suddenly flickered.
Lights dimmed.
Computer fans spun faster.
The servers hummed louder than before.
The cybercrime analyst shouted,
"It's drawing power!"
Daniel stopped.
"From where?"
"The entire underground grid."
00:15
Every monitor went black.
The alarms stopped.
Complete silence filled the tunnels.
Then...
The lights returned.
Not red.
Not flashing.
Bright white.
The analyst stared at her laptop.
Her eyes widened.
"Oh no."
Daniel stepped beside her.
"What happened?"
She slowly turned the screen toward him.
"The servers..."
"They're empty."
Emily frowned.
"What do you mean, empty?"
The analyst typed frantically.
"Every file..."
"Every recording..."
"Every backup..."
"Gone."
Thomas looked stunned.
"Deleted?"
The analyst shook her head.
"Worse."
"They've been transferred."
Daniel immediately asked,
"Transferred where?"
The analyst's fingers flew across the keyboard.
"I don't know."
"The destination server is hidden."
She paused.
"Wait."
"I found a timestamp."
"When?"
She swallowed.
"Exactly when the countdown reached zero."
Emily felt a chill run through her body.
"The countdown wasn't a bomb."
Thomas nodded slowly.
"It was a data transfer."
Daniel cursed under his breath.
"Eleanor used us."
William frowned.
"How?"
Thomas answered.
"While we searched the underground complex..."
"...she emptied the archive."
One FBI technician suddenly called out.
"Commander!"
Daniel hurried over.
"What now?"
"I found one file."
"Only one?"
"It's the only thing she intentionally left behind."
The technician opened the document.
Instead of financial records or surveillance footage...
A video message appeared.
Dr. Eleanor Graves smiled into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...you're exactly where I expected you to be."
Daniel folded his arms.
"What game are you playing?"
Eleanor continued speaking as if she could hear him.
"You've spent years believing power comes from money."
She smiled.
"It doesn't."
"It comes from information."
"And tonight..."
"...you helped me move all of mine."
Emily clenched her fists.
"You manipulated us."
Eleanor nodded.
"Very successfully."
The video continued.
"You recovered enough evidence to destroy one family."
"But while you celebrated..."
"My organization relocated information capable of controlling governments."
William whispered,
"My God..."
The screen changed.
A digital world map appeared.
Small red dots lit up one by one.
New York.
London.
Geneva.
Singapore.
Dubai.
Sydney.
Tokyo.
Washington.
Twelve cities.
Twelve secure servers.
Thomas stared in disbelief.
"The Council."
Daniel understood immediately.
"Twelve families."
"Twelve backup locations."
The final part of Eleanor's message began.
"By the time you locate one server..."
"...the others will already be moving."
She smiled again.
"Checkmate."
The screen went black.
Silence settled over the boardroom.
No one spoke for nearly a minute.
Finally Emily broke it.
"She's wrong."
Daniel looked at her.
"About what?"
Emily walked back toward the conference table.
Everyone watched as she studied the twelve bronze nameplates.
Then she smiled.
"What did Rebecca always do?"
Thomas answered.
"She planned ahead."
Emily nodded.
"My mother knew Eleanor."
"She knew how she thought."
She reached beneath the Hawthorne nameplate.
Her fingers found something taped underneath.
A tiny white memory card.
No larger than a fingernail.
Daniel's eyes widened.
"What is that?"
Emily carefully peeled it free.
"My mother hid it."
The forensic technician inserted the card into a secure reader.
One folder appeared.
Its title was simple.
Not Even Eleanor
Thomas smiled through tears.
"That's Rebecca."
Inside the folder were only three files.
One handwritten note.
One encrypted map.
One audio recording.
Emily opened the note first.
It read:
If Eleanor leaves evidence behind, assume it's a trap. If she removes everything, she's following the emergency protocol I predicted years ago. The map identifies the only archive she doesn't know exists.
Daniel looked at the encrypted map.
"Can you locate it?"
The technician worked quickly.
Thirty seconds later, a satellite image appeared.
The coordinates resolved into a familiar location.
Everyone stared.
William slowly whispered,
"No..."
Emily looked at him.
"You know that place?"
William nodded.
"It was Rebecca's favorite place as a little girl."
The map zoomed in further.
A weathered lighthouse stood alone on a rocky stretch of coastline.
Beneath the image, Rebecca had written six words in her own handwriting:
"Truth survives where light never dies."
Daniel looked around the room.
"Eleanor thinks she erased the last copy."
Emily closed the memory card case and slipped it carefully into her pocket.
"Then let's go find the one she missed."
At that exact moment, Daniel's secure military phone rang.
Only a handful of people in the country had that number.
He answered immediately.
"This is Carter."
The voice on the other end was tense.
"Colonel..."
"...someone just broke into the Pentagon archives."
Daniel's expression changed instantly.
"What was stolen?"
May you like
There was a long pause before the answer came.
"Your classified military service file."
