Chapter 18 - The Bloodline SecretThe words remained on the elevator screen.

TRUST NO ONE. NOT EVEN ME.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The hidden room beneath the Hawthorne mansion felt colder than before.

Not because of the underground air.

Because every person inside had just realized the same terrifying truth.

The person they trusted most...

Could be the person they understood the least.

Emily stared at the message.

Her mother's handwriting.

Her mother's warning.

But the meaning felt impossible.

Why would Rebecca tell her not to trust her?

After everything.

After years of believing she was gone.

After discovering that Rebecca had sacrificed everything to protect her...

Why leave a message that created even more doubt?

Daniel slowly approached.

"Emily."

She didn't look at him.

"Did you know?"

Daniel froze.

"Know what?"

She pointed at the document.

"About this."

"The Carter bloodline."

"The agreement."

"The successor."

Daniel looked genuinely confused.

"No."

Emily finally turned.

"Then why is your name on it?"

Daniel had no answer.

And that frightened everyone.

Thomas Bennett carefully picked up the document.

The old paper looked fragile.

Like it could disappear if touched too aggressively.

"This isn't fake."

Daniel looked at him.

"How can you tell?"

Thomas examined the ink.

"The paper."

"The seal."

"The authentication method."

He looked up.

"This is older than the Council of Twelve."

William stepped closer.

"So what does that mean?"

Thomas looked at the three names.

"Adrian Vale."

"Richard Hawthorne."

"Daniel Carter."

"It means the Council was not created by twelve families."

A pause.

"It means the Council was created by three people."

Emily looked at the signature again.

Her father's name stared back.

A name she had seen thousands of times.

On military awards.

On birthday cards.

On official documents.

A name that represented safety.

Now it represented another mystery.

Daniel walked away from the group.

For the first time, he looked defeated.

"I spent my entire career fighting corruption."

He looked at his hands.

"I believed I was protecting people from organizations like this."

Thomas watched him carefully.

"And now you think you were part of it."

Daniel didn't answer.

Because that was exactly what he feared.

The elevator suddenly powered on again.

Everyone raised their weapons.

The screen changed.

A video file appeared.

Title:

DANIEL CARTER - ORIGIN RECORD

Emily looked at her father.

"No."

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Play it."

The video began.

The quality was poor.

Old.

Recorded decades ago.

Three younger people sat around a table.

Adrian Vale.

Richard Hawthorne.

And a man who looked exactly like Daniel.

But younger.

Much younger.

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

The man was not her father.

Not the father she knew.

But he had Daniel's face.

Thomas whispered:

"Impossible."

The younger Daniel spoke first.

"The agreement must end with our generation."

Adrian looked calm.

"Not yet."

Richard looked angry.

"We created this to prevent chaos."

Adrian answered:

"We created this because people cannot be trusted with freedom."

Emily watched closely.

The younger Daniel looked different.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Cold.

Calculating.

Nothing like the man who raised her.

The video continued.

Richard asked:

"What about the child?"

Adrian answered:

"The child is the final solution."

The younger Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"She's innocent."

Adrian smiled.

"That's why she is valuable."

Emily stepped back.

"They're talking about me."

The video stopped.

A new file automatically opened.

This one was titled:

DANIEL CARTER - MEMORY TRANSFER

Nobody understood.

Until the first sentence appeared.

Subject agreed to identity separation protocol.

Daniel stared.

"What is this?"

Thomas read the document.

His face became pale.

"Identity separation..."

He slowly looked at Daniel.

"This technology existed only in experimental intelligence programs."

Daniel frowned.

"Explain."

Thomas swallowed.

"Removing information."

"Creating psychological barriers."

"Making someone forget specific events."

Emily looked horrified.

"You mean..."

Thomas nodded.

"Someone could have taken memories from him."

Daniel stared at the screen.

Suddenly, fragments began returning.

A room.

A conversation.

A woman crying.

A young Emily sleeping.

A promise.

A gunshot.

He grabbed the edge of the desk.

Emily immediately moved toward him.

"Dad?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I remember."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

Daniel's breathing became heavier.

"I remember the night Rebecca disappeared."

Emily held her breath.

"What happened?"

Daniel looked at her.

"I wasn't helping her escape."

A pause.

"I was helping her expose the Council."

Thomas stepped closer.

"Then why did you forget?"

Daniel looked toward the document.

"Because someone made me forget."

A hidden speaker activated.

Richard's voice filled the room.

"Finally."

Everyone turned.

The monitor showed Richard sitting somewhere unknown.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Daniel stared at the screen.

"You did this."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"I tried to prevent it."

Emily stepped forward.

"Then explain."

Richard looked at her.

"The man you call your father..."

"He is not the same person who signed that agreement."

Daniel frowned.

"What are you saying?"

Richard answered:

"Daniel Carter was chosen because he was the only person who could destroy the Council."

The room became silent.

Richard continued.

"Your father discovered what we built."

"He discovered the Council was not protecting the world."

"It was controlling it."

"So Adrian made a decision."

Emily whispered:

"He erased him."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel looked shocked.

"My memories..."

"Were removed."

Richard nodded.

"But not completely."

"The human mind protects itself."

"Some truths always return."

William looked at Richard.

"Why are you telling us this now?"

Richard's expression became serious.

"Because Adrian made one mistake."

"What mistake?"

"He believed controlling Daniel meant controlling Emily."

Suddenly, every phone and communication device inside the room activated.

A message appeared.

From Eleanor Graves.

Everyone froze.

YOU ARE LOOKING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.

Another message appeared.

ADRIAN IS NOT THE ARCHITECT.

A third message.

HE IS ONLY THE FIRST SERVANT.

Emily stared.

"First servant?"

Thomas looked confused.

"Then who is above him?"

The answer appeared slowly.

One word.

CARTER.

Daniel's face changed.

"No."

Emily looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Before he could answer...

The mansion shook.

A massive explosion erupted somewhere above them.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The lights flickered.

An FBI agent shouted through the radio:

"Commander!"

"Emergency!"

"What happened?"

The agent's voice was filled with panic.

"Someone attacked the mansion."

Daniel grabbed his weapon.

"Who?"

A long pause.

Then:

"We don't know."

"The attackers aren't trying to get inside."

Emily looked toward the ceiling.

"They're trying to destroy the evidence."

Another explosion.

The hidden room began collapsing.

Richard's screen flickered one final time.

His voice became urgent.

"Emily."

"Get out now."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

Richard answered:

"Because the person attacking this mansion..."

"...is someone who knows every secret passage."

A pause.

"And only one person has that knowledge."

The screen went black.

Daniel looked toward the hidden exit.

Emily whispered:

"Who?"

Daniel slowly raised his eyes.

His face filled with disbelief.

Because he already knew.

"The person who built this house."

Above them...

A single figure walked through the burning mansion.

Calm.

Unhurried.

Carrying a folder containing the last remaining secrets of the Hawthorne family.

As the flames reflected across the marble floor...

The person removed their hood.

May you like

And smiled.

It was Rebecca Carter.
