Chapter 17 - The Brother Who Was Never DeadThe message remained on every screen inside the hidden room.

PHASE THREE HAS BEGUN.
No one spoke.
The words seemed impossible.
Like a threat from a ghost.
Richard Hawthorne.
A man who had supposedly died thirty years ago.
A man whose existence had been erased from every family record.
A man who somehow knew exactly when Emily would discover the truth.
William Hawthorne stood frozen.
His face had lost all color.
Emily looked at him.
"Grandfather..."
William didn't respond.
She stepped closer.
"Who is Richard?"
For several seconds, William remained silent.
Then he whispered:
"My older brother."
The room went still.
Thomas Bennett stared at him.
"Older brother?"
William nodded slowly.
"Richard was the first Hawthorne."
Emily frowned.
"But you said the family business belonged to your father."
William looked at the old photographs on the wall.
"My father built the company."
"Richard built the system."
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"What system?"
William looked toward the dark monitor where Richard's face had disappeared.
"The one that became the Council."
Everyone absorbed the revelation.
The Council of Twelve had always been described as a partnership between powerful families.
But now they discovered something much darker.
Someone had been there before all of them.
Someone who created the foundation.
Someone who disappeared before history could remember him.
Emily looked at William.
"Why did everyone believe he was dead?"
William's expression became painful.
"Because I was told he was."
"By who?"
William hesitated.
Then answered:
"Adrian Vale."
Daniel immediately reacted.
"Adrian?"
William nodded.
"Richard and Adrian knew each other."
"Very well."
Thomas looked confused.
"Then why would Adrian hide Richard's existence?"
William slowly answered:
"Because Richard was the only person Adrian feared."
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A soft mechanical click.
Daniel raised his weapon.
Everyone turned.
The hidden room's bookshelf began moving.
A secret passage opened behind it.
Fresh air entered.
Someone had recently used the tunnel.
Daniel signaled the team.
"Stay behind me."
The tactical officers moved through the passage.
It led deeper beneath the mansion.
Much deeper than anyone expected.
The walls were newer.
The technology more advanced.
Cameras followed their movement.
Emily looked upward.
"They're watching us."
Daniel nodded.
"They've been watching everyone."
The passage ended at a small control room.
Unlike the underground chambers beneath the mansion and lighthouse...
This room was personal.
A single chair.
A desk.
A wall filled with handwritten notes.
And hundreds of photographs.
But these photographs were different.
They weren't of Emily.
They were of Rebecca.
Emily walked closer.
Her heart tightened.
Her mother was everywhere.
Investigating.
Following people.
Collecting evidence.
Meeting secretly.
And in every photograph...
One person appeared nearby.
Richard Hawthorne.
Thomas picked up a folder from the desk.
The label immediately caught his attention.
OPERATION: VANISHING DAUGHTER
Emily froze.
"That's about my mother."
Thomas opened it carefully.
Inside were reports.
Dates.
Locations.
Surveillance records.
Daniel looked over his shoulder.
The first page contained a sentence:
Objective: Remove Rebecca Hawthorne from Council influence without exposing her death.
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Remove?"
Thomas nodded.
"This wasn't an assassination plan."
Emily whispered:
"It was an extraction."
Another document fell from the folder.
A photograph.
Rebecca standing beside Richard.
They weren't enemies.
They looked like allies.
Behind the picture was a handwritten note:
"Richard understands the truth. He knows Emily cannot become what they planned."
William stared at the photograph.
"Impossible."
Emily looked at him.
"What?"
William shook his head.
"Richard hated Rebecca."
Thomas looked surprised.
"Are you sure?"
William answered:
"That's what everyone believed."
Daniel examined the documents.
"Maybe that was the point."
Everyone looked at him.
"What?"
Daniel continued.
"The Council controlled information."
"They created enemies."
"They created alliances."
"They decided what people believed."
A small audio recorder sat on the desk.
Emily pressed the button.
Static.
Then Rebecca's voice.
Her voice was tired.
But calm.
"Richard..."
A pause.
"I don't know if I can trust you."
The recording continued.
Richard answered.
"You shouldn't."
Rebecca sounded confused.
"Then why help me?"
Richard replied:
"Because I helped create the monster."
Everyone became silent.
Richard's voice continued.
"Adrian built the Council."
"But I taught him how to control people."
A pause.
"And I regret it."
Emily listened carefully.
Rebecca asked:
"Why now?"
Richard answered:
"Because Emily is old enough to choose."
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A small red light blinking beneath the desk.
"Everyone back."
The team moved away.
Daniel examined it.
"A transmitter."
Thomas frowned.
"Tracking us?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He looked at the device.
"It's sending."
The FBI analyst connected a scanner.
Her expression changed.
"Commander..."
"What?"
"The signal isn't going outside."
Daniel looked confused.
"Then where?"
She pointed downward.
"Below us."
The entire room went silent.
Below them.
Another level.
Another secret.
A hidden elevator appeared beneath the desk.
No buttons.
No controls.
Only a fingerprint scanner.
Everyone looked at William.
He shook his head.
"I've never seen this."
Thomas looked at Emily.
"Maybe it isn't for him."
Emily stepped forward.
The scanner activated.
Before she touched it...
A voice came through the speaker.
Richard.
"Hello, Emily."
She froze.
"How do you know I am here?"
Richard answered:
"Because this room was built for you."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Show yourself."
Richard ignored him.
"Emily, you have spent your entire life searching for answers."
"You searched for your mother."
"You searched for the Council."
"You searched for the person who betrayed your family."
A pause.
"But you never searched for yourself."
The scanner lit up.
A message appeared.
DNA CONFIRMED
WELCOME, EMILY CARTER
Everyone stared.
Daniel's expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
The elevator doors opened slowly.
Inside was a single object.
A black leather case.
Emily stepped closer.
On the case was a symbol.
Not Hawthorne.
Not Graves.
Not Carter.
A symbol none of them recognized.
Thomas looked at it carefully.
Then his face changed.
"No..."
Daniel turned.
"What?"
Thomas whispered:
"That's older than the Council."
Emily opened the case.
Inside was a document.
The paper was yellow with age.
At the top was a title:
THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT
Beneath it were three signatures.
The first:
Adrian Vale
The second:
Richard Hawthorne
The third...
Emily stopped breathing.
Because the final signature belonged to someone impossible.
Someone who had been dead for over fifty years.
Daniel Carter.
Everyone looked at Daniel.
He stepped back.
"No."
Emily stared at the signature.
Her voice trembled.
"My father..."
Daniel shook his head.
"I have never seen this document."
Then the final page of the agreement unfolded automatically.
A sentence appeared.
Written in bold:
The Carter bloodline shall remain hidden until the final successor awakens.
Below it:
Successor: Emily Carter
The lights suddenly shut off.
A final message appeared on the elevator screen.
Not from Richard.
Not from Eleanor.
Not from Adrian.
From Rebecca.
