Chapter 15 - The Truth About Daniel CarterThe underground chamber became a place without sound.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Every person inside stared at the frozen image of Rebecca Carter on the massive screen.

Alive.

Older.

But unmistakably her.

Emily's entire world seemed to stop.

Her mother.

The woman she had spent her entire life grieving.

The woman everyone told her was gone.

Was alive.

And she had just accused Daniel Carter—the man Emily trusted more than anyone—of helping her disappear.

Emily slowly turned.

"Dad..."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Daniel didn't answer.

For the first time in her memory...

Her father looked lost.

Not like a commander.

Not like a soldier.

Just a man standing in front of a truth he had buried for years.

"Say something."

Daniel looked at her.

His eyes were filled with pain.

"I can explain."

Emily stepped back.

"Explain what?"

"That my mother wasn't dead?"

"That you knew?"

"That you let me believe I was alone?"

Each word hurt more than the last.

William watched Daniel carefully.

"I need the truth."

Daniel closed his eyes.

For decades, he had carried a secret.

A promise.

A burden.

Now there was nowhere left to hide.

"I never wanted Emily involved."

Thomas shook his head.

"That doesn't answer the question."

Daniel looked at the screen.

At Rebecca.

Then back at his daughter.

"I helped Rebecca disappear."

The room exploded.

Everyone reacted at once.

Emily stared at him.

"You knew?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The anger in Emily's eyes was immediate.

"You let me mourn her."

Daniel's voice broke.

"I thought I was protecting you."

"Protecting me?"

Emily laughed bitterly.

"You watched me grow up believing my mother abandoned me."

"No."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Your mother never abandoned you."

"She loved you more than anything."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"Then why didn't she come back?"

Daniel had no answer.

Not immediately.

Because the answer was the truth he had spent years avoiding.

Twenty years earlier...

Daniel remembered the night everything changed.

A younger Rebecca had arrived at his military apartment after midnight.

She was terrified.

Not for herself.

For Emily.

"Daniel..."

She had whispered.

"They know about her."

Daniel remembered the fear in Rebecca's eyes.

Not the fear of death.

The fear of losing her daughter.

"Who knows?"

Rebecca had handed him a file.

Inside were documents about Project Successor.

Emily's name.

Her photograph.

Her future already planned.

"I thought they wanted money."

Rebecca had said.

"I was wrong."

"They want my daughter."

Daniel looked around the chamber.

"They had influence everywhere."

"Government."

"Business."

"Law enforcement."

"I couldn't protect Rebecca publicly."

"So we created a plan."

Emily stared.

"You faked her death."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"But the plan changed."

Thomas frowned.

"Why?"

Daniel looked toward Adrian Vale.

"Because someone found out."

Adrian remained silent.

For the first time, he didn't look confident.

He looked irritated.

Daniel continued.

"Rebecca was supposed to leave the country."

"She was supposed to disappear completely."

"But before she could..."

"Eleanor found her."

Emily whispered:

"And the accident?"

Daniel shook his head.

"The accident was real."

"But not the way everyone thought."

"The car was attacked because Eleanor wanted Rebecca captured."

"Not killed."

Everyone looked toward Adrian.

Daniel continued.

"Rebecca survived."

"But she knew if the Council discovered that..."

"They would never stop."

Emily wiped away tears.

"So you both left me."

Daniel's expression broke.

"No."

"We stayed away."

"Because every time we got close..."

"They watched."

Rebecca's video suddenly continued.

The screen flickered back to life.

Her voice filled the chamber again.

"Daniel..."

"If Emily is watching this, I know you kept your promise."

Daniel looked up.

Rebecca smiled sadly from the screen.

"You were always better at protecting people than protecting yourself."

A tear moved down Daniel's face.

Rebecca continued.

"Emily, I need you to understand."

"Your father didn't betray me."

"He saved me."

"He saved you."

Emily stood frozen.

Her anger began fighting with her grief.

She wanted to be angry.

She deserved answers.

But she also saw the truth.

Her father had carried the same pain she had.

The video changed.

Rebecca appeared sitting inside a small room.

Behind her was a window overlooking the ocean.

"The Council believes power comes from controlling people."

"They're wrong."

"Power comes from giving people the ability to choose."

She looked directly into the camera.

"Emily, I never wanted you to inherit an empire."

"I wanted you to have a life."

Adrian interrupted.

"She was always sentimental."

Everyone looked at him.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Rebecca loved her daughter."

"But love makes people weak."

Emily turned toward him.

"No."

"Love is why she survived."

For the first time, Adrian's expression hardened.

"You don't understand what you're facing."

Emily walked closer.

"No."

"I understand perfectly."

"You spent decades believing everyone was a piece on a chessboard."

She looked around the chamber.

"Even your own family."

Suddenly, the FBI analyst shouted.

"Commander!"

Everyone turned.

She was staring at her laptop.

"What happened?"

"I found a hidden transmission."

"From Rebecca."

Daniel frowned.

"Another one?"

The analyst nodded.

"But this one wasn't recorded twenty years ago."

She looked up.

"It was sent three hours ago."

The room froze.

Three hours ago.

Rebecca wasn't just alive.

She was active.

The analyst opened the message.

A video appeared.

Rebecca stood outside.

Wind moved through her gray hair.

She looked directly at the camera.

"I know Adrian has revealed himself."

"I know Emily has learned about Daniel."

"But there is one truth none of them know."

Rebecca's expression became serious.

"The Council of Twelve was never my greatest concern."

She paused.

"The greatest threat was someone inside my own family."

Emily felt cold.

The video continued.

"I spent twenty years trying to find the person who betrayed me."

"I finally discovered the truth."

Rebecca looked away from the camera.

Then back.

"Emily..."

"The person who gave Eleanor the information that led to my disappearance..."

"...was someone you have trusted your entire life."

The video stopped.

No explanation.

No name.

Just silence.

Everyone looked at one another.

Daniel immediately reached for his radio.

"Secure the building."

The FBI agents moved.

William looked terrified.

Thomas whispered,

"Who knew?"

Daniel answered slowly.

"Very few people."

Emily's mind raced.

Family.

Friends.

Allies.

Someone close enough to know the plan.

Someone who had been trusted.

Then one of the FBI officers rushed into the chamber.

"Commander!"

Daniel turned.

"What?"

The officer held up a tablet.

"We traced the source of Rebecca's transmission."

Daniel took it.

His expression changed.

"Where?"

The officer swallowed.

"Inside the Hawthorne mansion."

Everyone froze.

The officer continued:

"The signal is coming from..."

He hesitated.

"...the room where Emily grew up."

Emily stared.

Her childhood bedroom.

A place filled with memories.

A place she believed was safe.

Daniel immediately gave the order.

"We go now."

But before they could leave...

Adrian Vale spoke quietly.

"You still don't understand."

Everyone stopped.

Adrian looked at Emily.

"The person you're looking for..."

"Isn't hiding in your house."

May you like

A pause.

"They're waiting for you to find them."
