Chapter 6 - The Ghost Behind the Hawthorne EmpireThe room fell into stunned silence.

Every pair of eyes remained fixed on the frozen image displayed on the forensic monitor.

The enhancement software had sharpened the grainy frame enough to reveal the unmistakable face of a man everyone believed had been buried fifteen years ago.

Charles Hawthorne.

William's only son.

Ethan's father.

Emily slowly turned toward her grandfather.

"You told everyone he died."

William's weathered face turned pale.

"I believed he did."

Daniel Carter folded his arms.

"Then someone buried another man in his place."

No one answered.

The possibility was almost impossible to comprehend.

Yet after everything they had uncovered that night, impossible no longer meant unbelievable.

The forensic technician zoomed in again.

"Commander..."

Daniel stepped closer.

"What else?"

The technician pointed to the timestamp.

"This recording was made twenty years ago."

He clicked another icon.

"The restoration software recovered several missing seconds."

Rebecca reappeared on screen.

She looked frightened.

She backed away from the camera as Charles entered the room.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Rebecca... we can still solve this as a family."

Rebecca shook her head.

"There is no family anymore."

"You stole everything."

Charles smiled faintly.

"No."

"I protected what belonged to us."

Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.

"It never belonged to you."

"You forged Grandfather's signature."

"You bribed directors."

"You stole my inheritance."

Charles took another step forward.

"You should have stayed quiet."

The video suddenly distorted.

Static consumed the screen.

Then everything went black.

Emily couldn't breathe.

For years she had imagined her mother dying alone on a dark highway.

Now she knew Rebecca had spent her final hours fighting to expose the truth.

Daniel quietly wiped his eyes.

His grief had never disappeared.

It had simply waited.

Now it had transformed into determination.

"I want Charles found."

One FBI agent hesitated.

"Commander..."

"If he's alive, he's been hiding successfully for fifteen years."

Daniel nodded.

"Then tonight is the night his hiding ends."

Upstairs, detectives continued searching the mansion.

Every hidden compartment seemed to reveal another secret.

Detective Lisa Monroe called over the radio.

"Commander."

Daniel answered immediately.

"Go ahead."

"We've located a private office beneath the garage."

William frowned.

"There isn't an office beneath the garage."

Lisa replied,

"There is now."

The underground office was unlike anything else in the mansion.

Modern computers.

Satellite communication equipment.

Encrypted servers.

Fresh coffee still sat on the desk.

Someone had been using the room recently.

Very recently.

One detective touched the coffee mug.

"It's still warm."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Whoever was here left only minutes ago."

A younger officer searched the desk drawers.

"Commander..."

Daniel walked over.

"What did you find?"

The officer held up a passport.

Then another.

Then another.

Different names.

Different countries.

Different photographs.

Yet every passport showed the same man.

Charles Hawthorne.

He had lived under at least six different identities.

Daniel flipped through the documents.

"He's been preparing escape routes for years."

Meanwhile, Victoria sat alone inside a temporary holding room.

Her wrists remained cuffed.

For the first time in decades, no assistant stood beside her.

No expensive attorney.

No loyal employee.

Only silence.

The door opened.

Emily entered.

Neither woman spoke for several seconds.

Finally, Victoria broke the silence.

"So..."

"You finally won."

Emily shook her head.

"This isn't winning."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"You have everything."

"The company."

"The evidence."

"The truth."

Emily looked directly into her grandmother's eyes.

"I would trade every dollar..."

"...to have my mother back."

Victoria's expression changed.

For the first time, genuine regret flickered across her face.

Only for a moment.

Then it disappeared.

"I didn't order her death."

Emily remained calm.

"But you covered it up."

Victoria looked away.

She couldn't deny that.

Outside, reporters continued broadcasting live.

The Hawthorne scandal dominated every national news network.

Financial analysts predicted Hawthorne Capital's stock would collapse when markets opened.

Federal prosecutors arrived.

So did agents from the Internal Revenue Service and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The mansion had become the center of one of the largest corporate crime investigations in decades.

Back underground, Thomas Bennett studied one of Rebecca's evidence binders.

He suddenly stopped turning pages.

William noticed.

"What is it?"

Thomas slowly removed a folded blueprint.

"I haven't seen this in years."

Daniel accepted it.

It was an architectural drawing of the Hawthorne estate.

At first glance it appeared ordinary.

Then he noticed something.

Several underground passages weren't marked in blue.

They were marked in red.

"What does red mean?"

Thomas answered quietly.

"They weren't built for hiding."

"They were built for escaping."

Daniel spread the blueprint across the table.

"There are four exits."

William frowned.

"I only know about two."

Thomas pointed toward the eastern side of the property.

"Charles added these after you disappeared."

Daniel immediately radioed the tactical teams.

"Seal every underground exit."

"No one enters or leaves without authorization."

Officers acknowledged the order.

But they were already too late.

Nearly half a mile from the mansion, hidden among dense pine trees, a rusted steel hatch slowly lifted.

A pair of polished black shoes stepped onto the damp ground.

The man paused, listening to the distant sound of helicopters overhead.

Then he removed a disposable cell phone from his coat.

He dialed one number.

The call connected after two rings.

"I warned you this day would come."

A woman's voice answered.

"I thought Victoria destroyed everything."

"So did I."

The man looked back toward the mansion.

"But Rebecca was smarter than all of us."

He removed a fake beard from his face.

Underneath was the older, thinner face seen in the recovered video.

Charles Hawthorne.

Alive.

He smiled without warmth.

"If Emily wants the truth..."

"...I'll make sure she gets all of it."

He ended the call.

Then disappeared into the darkness.

Back at the mansion, the forensic technician finished decrypting another hard drive recovered from the hidden office.

"Commander."

Daniel walked over.

"What now?"

"I found Charles' personal calendar."

Daniel scanned the screen.

Most entries were coded.

But one appointment had no encryption.

It was scheduled for tomorrow morning.

8:00 A.M.

Location: Harbor Warehouse 17

Purpose: Final Transfer

Daniel frowned.

"Final transfer?"

The technician clicked the attached file.

A shipping manifest appeared.

Its declared contents read:

Historical Documents.

But the total insured value stunned everyone.

$850,000,000.

Daniel looked at William.

"What documents are worth eight hundred fifty million dollars?"

William slowly closed his eyes.

"There aren't documents."

Daniel waited.

William whispered,

"They're bearer bonds."

"Original ownership certificates."

"And the only papers that can legally prove who owns Hawthorne Capital."

Emily's eyes widened.

"If Charles gets them..."

William nodded gravely.

"He could disappear forever..."

"...with nearly the entire Hawthorne fortune."

Daniel looked at the tactical commander standing nearby.

"Call every available unit."

"We move at sunrise."

No one in the room realized...

Charles Hawthorne had anticipated exactly that.

And Harbor Warehouse 17...

Was only the beginning of his final plan.
