Chapter 10 - The Porch Camera

Mrs. Alvarez called the next morning with a question that changed the case again.
"Do you remember the little camera my grandson installed over my garage?"
Claire was feeding Lily.
"Yes."
"It points toward my driveway."
Claire sat straighter.
"And part of your yard."
Maya was already reaching for her coat.
They drove to Mrs. Alvarez's house before noon.
The street looked ordinary.
That made Claire angry.
Children's plastic sleds leaned against garages.
Smoke lifted from chimneys.
The Birch Street house stood warm and quiet.
Someone had removed the broken crib from the lawn.
Ethan's SUV was gone.
Margaret's sedan was parked near the porch.
Claire looked away.
Inside Mrs. Alvarez's kitchen, her grandson had pulled video from the cloud.
The camera had recorded motion on the night of the eviction.
At 6:42 p.m., Margaret's car arrived.
At 6:47, she entered the house carrying a black leather tote.
At 7:03, Ethan arrived.
At 7:18, the front door opened.
Claire appeared holding Lily.
She was barefoot except for socks.
The audio was faint but clear enough to capture Ethan shouting.
"Get out of my house!"
Claire flinched even though she knew the words were coming.
On screen, Ethan carried the crib into the yard.
He threw it.
Wood shattered.
Mrs. Alvarez covered her mouth.
"I saw the end of it, but not this part."
Claire could not look away.
The camera captured Margaret standing on the porch.
"You brought this on yourself."
Then came Claire's voice.
"Ethan, call the clinic."
The camera showed Margaret's head turn sharply.
Maya paused the video.
"That's useful."
They continued.
Mrs. Alvarez crossed the street.
Claire left.
Then something happened Claire had not seen.
Margaret walked to the broken crib.
She crouched beside it.
She searched through the pieces.
Claire's skin prickled.
"She was looking for the key."
Margaret picked up the carved star.
She turned it over.
Then she dropped it.
She searched beneath a broken rail.
By then, the key was gone.
Mrs. Alvarez had already pocketed it.
Margaret stood.
Her face was tight with frustration.
She returned inside.
Maya rewound.
"Your father told someone about the compartment."
Claire shook her head.
"He barely told me."
"Maybe Margaret discovered it another way."
The video continued.
Eight minutes later, Margaret came back out.
She carried Claire's suitcase.
She placed it on the porch.
Then she returned inside.
At 8:01, Mrs. Alvarez crossed over and knocked.
Margaret answered.
They could hear part of the exchange.
"She needs her coat."
"Fine."
"Her shoes too."
"She can buy shoes."
Mrs. Alvarez's recorded voice rose.
"She has a newborn."
Margaret disappeared inside.
When she returned, she carried Claire's coat in one hand.
In the other was a small dark velvet box.
Mrs. Alvarez pointed at the screen.
"That's what I told you about."
Maya paused the video.
The image was grainy.
But the box was visible.
Margaret opened her handbag.
She placed the velvet box inside.
Claire stared.
"The bracelet."
"Maybe," Maya said.
They kept watching.
Margaret handed over Claire's coat.
Then, just before closing the door, she said something.
The audio was faint.
Mrs. Alvarez increased the volume.
Margaret's voice came through.
"If she asks about the key, tell her the snowplow took everything."
Claire's pulse jumped.
Maya replayed it.
There was no mistake.
Margaret knew about the key.
More importantly, she believed Mrs. Alvarez might find it.
Claire looked toward the Birch Street house through the kitchen window.
"How long has she known about my father's documents?"
Maya did not answer.
The footage ended.
Then Mrs. Alvarez's grandson clicked another date.
"There's something else."
The recording was from eleven days before the eviction.
At 10:22 a.m., Ethan's SUV arrived at Birch Street.
Margaret was already inside.
Ethan emerged from the vehicle carrying a white envelope.
He went into the house.
Twenty minutes later, he came out with Margaret.
They stood beside the car.
The camera microphone captured only fragments.
"...box number..."
"...can't use Claire's name..."
"...just old paperwork..."
Then Ethan said something clear.
"If this comes back on me, Mom, I'm done."
Margaret answered.
"It won't."
Claire stopped breathing.
Ethan handed Margaret the white envelope.
Maya froze the frame.
On the front were two printed words.
NORTHBRIDGE BANK.
Claire looked at Maya.
"He didn't just tell her about Box 417."
"No."
"He gave her something from the bank."
"Looks that way."
Claire's phone rang.
Ethan.
She answered on speaker.
"What?"
His voice sounded strained.
"Mom told me you went to Mrs. Alvarez."
Claire glanced at the window.
Margaret's sedan was still parked next door.
"How does she know?"
"She can see your lawyer's car."
Claire's spine stiffened.
Maya stepped toward the blinds.
"Is Margaret at the house now?"
"Yes."
"What is she doing?"
A pause.
"Packing."
Claire frowned.
"Packing what?"
"I don't know."
A crash sounded faintly through Ethan's phone.
Then Margaret shouted in the background.
Something about the basement.
Ethan swore.
"Mom, what are you doing?"
Another crash.
The call became muffled.
Claire heard footsteps.
Then Ethan's breathing.
He said, "Claire."
"What?"
"Did your father keep records in the basement?"
Claire's stomach dropped.
"Why?"
May you like
Ethan whispered.
"Because Mom is burning them."
