Chapter 14 - The Signature That Shouldn't Exist

Paul Wexler did not answer his phone.
He did not answer Maya's preservation notice.
He did not appear at Hale North's office the next morning.
By noon, his company email had been disabled.
At 1:15, Thomas Greer called Maya.
"Paul resigned."
Maya put him on speaker.
"When?"
"Today."
"Convenient."
Thomas sounded exhausted.
"I am not representing Paul."
"Then why are you calling?"
"Because Ethan asked me to tell you he had no knowledge of the forged deed."
Claire sat across the room.
She almost laughed.
Maya glanced at her.
"Mr. Hale has made that claim about several things."
Thomas sighed.
"I know."
Maya's eyebrow rose.
That was the first time Ethan's own lawyer had sounded unconvinced.
"Where is Paul?" Maya asked.
"I don't know."
Claire leaned toward the speaker.
"Ask Ethan where Paul keeps his hunting cabin."
Silence.
Thomas said, "How do you know about that?"
"Ethan took me there once."
Maya looked at Claire.
"Where?"
"Near Lake Geneva."
Thomas ended the call without another word.
Two hours later, Paul Wexler's attorney contacted Maya.
Paul wanted immunity from civil claims in exchange for cooperation.
Maya did not promise anything.
She arranged a recorded interview.
Paul appeared by video from his attorney's office.
He was fifty-three, grey-haired, and visibly sweating.
Maya began with the deed.
"Did you notarize Claire Bennett's signature?"
Paul swallowed.
"Yes."
"Was she present?"
"No."
"Did you know the signature was not hers?"
"Yes."
Claire felt her fingers curl.
"Who asked you to do it?"
Paul looked at the camera.
"Margaret."
Maya did not react.
"Did Ethan know?"
Paul hesitated.
Claire stopped breathing.
"Mr. Wexler."
"I don't know what Ethan knew."
"That wasn't my question."
Paul rubbed his forehead.
"Maggie told me Ethan knew."
Claire flinched at the familiarity.
Maggie.
Paul knew Margaret well.
Maya continued.
"Did Ethan ever personally instruct you to forge Claire's signature?"
"No."
"Did he ever discuss transferring Birch Street without Claire's consent?"
Paul hesitated again.
"Yes."
Claire's chest tightened.
"When?"
"Several times."
"What did he say?"
"He said the trust restrictions were killing the company."
"Did he say how he intended to overcome them?"
"He said his mother was handling it."
Claire looked down.
There it was again.
He had not signed the fake deed.
He had simply allowed the machinery around him to operate.
Maya asked, "Why was Hale North desperate for the house equity?"
Paul's face changed.
"Because the company isn't nine million in debt."
Claire frowned.
Maya leaned forward.
"How much?"
Paul looked miserable.
"Closer to twenty-two."
The room went silent.
Claire stared at him.
"How?"
Paul exhaled.
"Projects went bad."
"Which ones?"
"The Rivergate development."
"I thought that made money."
"It did on paper."
Maya's eyes narrowed.
"On paper?"
Paul nodded.
"We recognized revenue early."
Claire did not understand.
Maya did.
"You inflated performance to obtain lending."
Paul looked away.
"Yes."
"Who approved it?"
"Margaret pushed it."
"Who signed the statements?"
"Ethan."
Claire closed her eyes.
There was no longer a clean version of Ethan left.
Maybe he had not invented the first lie.
Maybe he had not forged her name.
But he had signed things.
He had looked away.
He had accepted convenience.
Again and again.
Paul continued.
"Margaret moved money through MHC to cover short-term holes."
Maya asked, "Was it theft?"
Paul rubbed his face.
"Some of it went back into Hale North."
"Some?"
Paul said nothing.
"Where did the rest go?"
"I don't know."
"How much is missing?"
"About three point six million."
Claire stared.
"Margaret took three point six million dollars?"
"I can't prove she kept it."
"But it's gone."
"Yes."
Maya asked, "What role did the Cole family play?"
Paul shook his head.
"They thought they were investing in a distressed company with strong real estate backing."
"Backing that did not belong to Hale North."
"Correct."
Claire leaned closer.
"Was Serena part of the plan to replace me?"
Paul's face flushed.
"I heard Margaret talk about it."
"What did she say?"
"She said if Ethan married Serena after a divorce, Richard Cole would stop worrying about family instability."
Claire felt disgust rise.
"Family instability."
"Her words."
"Did Ethan agree?"
Paul hesitated.
"I heard him tell Margaret to stop talking about Serena."
Claire stared.
Then Paul added, "But he also didn't walk away from the Cole money."
Of course he hadn't.
Maya shifted to the old paternity report.
"Do you know who Ethan's biological father is?"
Paul's eyes moved sharply.
"No."
"Did Margaret ever discuss it?"
"No."
Claire watched him.
He was lying.
Not about the deed.
Not about the money.
About this.
Maya saw it too.
"Mr. Wexler, your cooperation will be evaluated by its completeness."
Paul's attorney touched his arm.
Paul whispered something off camera.
Then he looked back.
"Margaret made one payment every year."
"To whom?"
"I don't know his real name."
"How much?"
"Fifty thousand."
"From where?"
"MHC."
"What was the memo?"
Paul swallowed.
"T.H. settlement."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"Thomas Hale?"
"No."
"Then what does T.H. mean?"
Paul looked terrified.
"I was told never to ask."
Maya's voice stayed calm.
"When was the most recent payment?"
"Two weeks before Lily was born."
"Did it clear?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"The account was closed."
Claire asked, "What happened after that?"
Paul looked at her.
"Margaret panicked."
Maya said, "Why?"
"Because the recipient contacted her directly."
"How?"
"Mail."
Paul leaned closer.
"There was a letter."
"Where is it?"
"In Margaret's office."
Claire looked at Ethan, who had been allowed to listen from Thomas's office on a separate line.
He had not spoken once.
Now his voice came through the speaker.
"I found it."
Everyone went quiet.
Ethan sounded hollow.
"It says, 'You promised Daniel the truth would die with him.'"
Claire's skin prickled.
Maya asked, "Who signed it?"
Ethan took a long breath.
"Henry Vale."
Margaret's maiden name was Vale.
Claire knew that.
Ethan continued.
"And underneath, he wrote one more line."
No one interrupted.
May you like
Ethan read it aloud.
"Tell Ethan his father is still alive."
