Chapter 6 - Margaret's First Lie Goes Public

Maya looked at the photograph of the real estate agent and did not blink.

"Good."

Claire stared at her.

"Good?"

"People who think they're winning make mistakes in writing."

Maya forwarded the photograph to herself.

Then she called the county recorder, the trust attorney listed in Daniel's documents, and an emergency civil judge's clerk.

By sunset, a temporary notice had been filed against the Birch Street property.

No sale could close without resolving the trust's ownership.

Claire expected Margaret to retreat.

Instead, Margaret went public.

At 7:46 that evening, Rachel finally called.

Claire answered immediately.

"Where have you been?"

"Claire, what is happening?"

Claire heard panic in her sister's voice.

"Did Ethan call you?"

"No."

"Margaret?"

"No."

Rachel paused.

"It's online."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"What is?"

"Margaret posted something."

Claire opened social media.

The first thing she saw was a photograph from her baby shower.

Claire was smiling in a pale blue dress.

Ethan stood beside her with one hand on her stomach.

Margaret had cropped herself into the corner.

Above the photo was a long statement.

Our family is experiencing an extremely painful private matter.

Out of respect for an innocent child, we will not share every detail.

However, false accusations are now being made against Ethan and me after Claire was confronted with evidence concerning infidelity, financial dishonesty, and the baby's paternity.

We have tried to handle this quietly.

We are praying that truth and accountability will prevail.

Claire read it twice.

Then she saw the comments.

Some people expressed sympathy.

Some asked invasive questions.

Some defended Claire.

Others did not.

A former coworker wrote, I always knew there was something off about her.

A woman Claire had met twice wrote, Poor Ethan.

Then Margaret added a comment of her own.

We also discovered missing jewelry and irregular withdrawals.

Claire felt physically sick.

"She is accusing me of stealing."

Maya had already opened her laptop.

"Screenshot everything."

Rachel's voice sharpened over speaker.

"Do you want me to respond?"

"No," Maya said.

Rachel went silent.

"Who is that?"

"My lawyer."

"Good."

Rachel sounded relieved.

"Because I have receipts too."

Claire looked at the phone.

"What do you mean?"

"Margaret called me three weeks ago."

Claire froze.

"What?"

"She asked questions about you."

"What kind of questions?"

"Whether you ever cheated in college."

Claire's mouth fell open.

Rachel continued.

"She asked whether there had been anyone before Ethan who might 'reappear.'"

Maya started taking notes.

"What did you tell her?" Claire asked.

"That she was being disgusting."

Rachel paused.

"Then she offered me money."

Claire stared at the wall.

"Money for what?"

"To tell Ethan there had been someone."

The room went completely quiet.

"How much?"

"Ten thousand dollars."

Claire shut her eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I thought she was drunk or losing her mind."

Rachel's voice cracked.

"And you had just had the baby."

Maya leaned toward the phone.

"Rachel, do you have any evidence of that conversation?"

"No recording."

"Texts?"

"She texted afterward."

"What did she say?"

Rachel's fingers clicked.

Then she read aloud.

Think about what I offered.

Sometimes protecting family requires unpleasant honesty.

Maya looked at Claire.

"Send screenshots now."

Rachel did.

Within minutes, they had another piece of the pattern.

Margaret had been trying to manufacture an affair before Lily was born.

The fake paternity report was not an impulsive weapon.

It was the final prop.

Claire scrolled through Margaret's public statement again.

Then she noticed something beneath it.

A photograph had been attached in a later comment.

It showed a man's hand resting on Claire's shoulder outside a restaurant.

The caption read:

For those asking why Ethan had concerns.

Claire zoomed in.

She recognized the man immediately.

"That's Andrew."

Maya looked over.

"Who?"

"My cousin."

Rachel cursed through the phone.

"That's Andrew from Mom's side."

The picture had been cropped to hide his face.

Maya smiled for the first time that day.

It was not a warm smile.

"Excellent."

Claire frowned.

"How is this excellent?"

"Because she just published a deliberately misleading image to support an accusation she knows is false."

Claire rubbed her forehead.

"I don't understand how she can do this without caring what happens."

Maya closed the laptop.

"People like Margaret don't usually think they're lying."

Claire looked at her.

"They think they're arranging reality."

That night, the shelter manager moved Claire and Lily to a different room after a reporter called the front desk asking whether Claire was staying there.

Claire's fear shifted.

The fight was no longer contained inside a house.

Margaret had moved it into the open.

At 11:08, Ethan called.

Claire answered.

He did not say hello.

"Tell your lawyer to remove the hold on the house."

"No."

"Claire."

"It's not your house."

A long silence followed.

"I didn't know Daniel put it entirely in the trust."

Claire felt something inside her harden.

"You signed the acknowledgment."

"That was paperwork your dad put in front of me."

"On the day you proposed."

"I didn't read every page."

Claire stared at the wall.

"Then why did you ask me about the key?"

Another silence.

Claire sat forward.

"Ethan."

He exhaled.

"Mom told me your father hid documents in the crib."

"How did she know?"

"I don't know."

"Yes, you do."

"No, Claire, I don't."

"Did you let her into Box 417?"

He said nothing.

Claire's hand tightened around the phone.

"Ethan."

"She said there were old company records that belonged to us."

"So you gave her permission to forge my name?"

"I didn't know she was going to sign as you."

"But you gave her the box number."

He whispered, "Yes."

Claire closed her eyes.

The betrayal was quieter now.

That made it worse.

"Why?"

"Because the company is in trouble."

Claire opened her eyes.

"What kind of trouble?"

He hesitated.

Then the line went dead.

A second later, a text arrived from Maya.

She had run a public lien search on Hale North Properties.

The message contained a screenshot.

Three lenders had filed notices in the last two months.

The amount due was more than nine million dollars.

And one of the loans was secured by a property Claire recognized.

May you like

118 Birch Street.

Her house.
