Chapter 13 - The Open House

Margaret disappeared for fourteen hours.

Ethan called the police.

He called Thomas Greer.

He called Serena's father.

He called Claire six times.

Claire answered none of them.

At 7:30 the next morning, Margaret's sedan returned to Birch Street.

At 8:10, three luxury cars arrived.

At 8:25, a real estate sign went up.

OPEN HOUSE - PRIVATE BUYERS.

Claire stared at the photograph Mrs. Alvarez sent.

"She came back to sell the house."

Maya looked almost offended by the audacity.

"The injunction is on record."

"Does she know?"

"She was served."

"So what is she doing?"

"Creating leverage or chaos."

Claire stood.

"I want to go."

Maya hesitated.

Then she nodded.

"We go together."

When they reached Birch Street, Margaret was greeting potential buyers at the front door.

She wore the camel coat.

Her blonde hair was perfectly arranged.

Nothing about her suggested a woman who had vanished after a paternity secret surfaced.

Claire stepped onto the walkway.

Margaret saw her.

For the first time in days, Margaret looked surprised.

Then the cold smile returned.

"You shouldn't be here."

Claire stopped ten feet away.

"I could say the same."

A real estate agent stepped between them.

"Is there a problem?"

Maya handed her a copy of the court order.

"This property cannot be transferred."

The agent read the first page.

Her face changed.

"Mrs. Hale?"

Margaret did not look at her.

"That order is being challenged."

Maya said, "No hearing has been scheduled."

Margaret's jaw tightened.

Another car pulled up.

Then a county sheriff's vehicle.

Maya had arranged for service of an expanded preservation order that morning.

The deputy approached.

"Margaret Hale?"

Margaret's eyes flashed.

"Yes."

"You've been served."

Buyers began whispering.

The real estate agent folded the sign.

Margaret watched her.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm leaving."

"You have a contract."

"I have a license."

She walked away.

Claire almost smiled.

Margaret stepped closer.

"You think you've won something."

Claire remained still.

"I think you're standing in a house you tried to steal."

Margaret's eyes hardened.

"Your father stole first."

Claire felt the words hit.

"What does that mean?"

Margaret looked toward Maya.

"I won't discuss private family history in front of an attorney."

Maya said, "That's usually when you should."

Margaret ignored her.

"Ethan was supposed to inherit Hale North."

Claire frowned.

"Hale North didn't exist until my father funded it."

"It existed as an idea."

"That is not ownership."

Margaret's face tightened.

"Daniel took advantage of a young man who trusted him."

Claire felt anger rise.

"My father gave Ethan one point four million dollars."

"He attached chains to it."

"He attached terms."

"Same thing."

Claire stared at her.

Margaret leaned closer.

"Your father knew Ethan wasn't Thomas's biological son."

The winter air seemed to disappear.

Maya watched carefully.

Claire said, "And?"

Margaret's lips curved slightly.

"He used it."

"Used it how?"

"He told me if I interfered with the trust, he would tell Ethan."

Claire felt sick.

"Did my father blackmail you?"

Margaret's expression sharpened.

"He called it protecting his daughter."

Claire did not believe her.

Not yet.

But the accusation was serious enough to hurt.

"What did he want?"

"Control."

"Of what?"

"Ethan."

Margaret's voice trembled for the first time.

"Of the company."

Claire looked at Maya.

Maya did not react.

Margaret continued.

"Daniel knew Ethan worshipped Thomas's memory."

"Thomas was dead."

"Exactly."

Claire stared.

Margaret's eyes glistened, but her voice remained hard.

"If Ethan learned the truth, he would have lost the only father he thought he had all over again."

Claire thought of Ethan's messages.

He had found the old report.

He was probably reliving his childhood in a single night.

That did not excuse what he had done.

But it explained why Margaret had hidden one secret with such desperation.

Claire asked, "Who is Ethan's biological father?"

Margaret's face closed completely.

"None of your business."

"It became my business when you used an old paternity report to fake one about my daughter."

Margaret stepped back.

A door opened behind her.

Ethan stood in the entryway.

He looked pale.

"Tell me."

Margaret turned.

Her face changed instantly.

Not cold.

Afraid.

"Ethan."

"Tell me who my father is."

"Not here."

"You've had twenty-nine years."

Margaret's composure cracked.

"Please."

Claire had never heard Margaret say that word sincerely.

Ethan walked onto the porch.

In his hand was the old report.

"You used this to create the lie about Lily."

Margaret looked at Claire with naked hatred.

"This is her fault."

Ethan laughed once.

It sounded empty.

"No."

He held up the report.

"This was here before I met her."

Margaret stepped toward him.

"I protected you."

"You lied to me."

"I protected you."

"You made me throw my wife and daughter out."

Margaret's face hardened.

"You chose to do that."

The sentence stopped everyone.

Claire stared at her.

So did Ethan.

Margaret realized too late what she had said.

For weeks, Ethan had blamed Margaret's manipulation.

Margaret had just returned the blame to him.

Ethan's eyes lowered.

When he looked up again, something had changed.

He stepped aside from the doorway.

"Claire."

She did not move.

"The house is yours."

Margaret snapped, "Ethan."

He ignored her.

"Come in."

Claire looked at the doorway.

The last time she crossed that threshold, she had been pushed toward the snow.

Now Ethan was offering access as if he were surrendering a battlefield.

Maya touched Claire's arm.

"You don't have to."

Claire looked at Lily's empty nursery window upstairs.

Then at Margaret.

"I do."

She entered the house.

The warmth hit her first.

Then the smell.

Burned paper.

In the foyer, a framed photograph of Claire and Ethan still stood on the table.

Margaret had turned it face down.

Claire picked it up.

Behind the frame was another document.

A notarized quitclaim deed.

It appeared to transfer the Birch Street house from Bennett Residential Trust to Hale Family Holdings.

Claire's signature sat at the bottom.

Claire stared.

"I never signed this."

Maya took the page.

The notary seal was dated eight months earlier.

Serena had said Margaret approached her father eight months earlier.

Maya looked at the notary name.

Then at Claire.

"This is the signature that made Margaret think she could sell the house."

Claire asked, "Who notarized it?"

Maya read the name.

Paul Wexler.

Ethan went white.

Claire noticed.

"You know him."

Ethan said nothing.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Claire's voice sharpened.

"Ethan."

He finally answered.

"Paul is Hale North's chief financial officer."

Claire looked from him to Margaret.

Then she understood.

The forged deed was not Margaret's private scheme.

Someone inside Ethan's company had helped.

Maybe more than one person.

May you like

And if the deed had been sitting behind Claire's wedding photograph, they had not hidden it very far.

They had believed she would never be in the house long enough to find it.
