Chapter 7 - The Paternity Test

The emergency custody petition arrived the next morning.
Ethan filed exactly what Thomas Greer had threatened.
The petition argued that Claire was emotionally unstable, had abruptly removed Lily from the marital home, and was refusing reasonable access.
Claire read the sentence three times.
"He threw me out."
Maya nodded.
"I know."
"He changed the locks."
"I know."
"He smashed her crib in the yard."
"I know."
"And this says I 'abruptly removed' her?"
"Welcome to pleadings."
Claire looked furious.
"Can we prove what happened?"
"Mrs. Alvarez saw it."
"Margaret will say she is biased."
"We also have hospital intake records showing you arrived in socks with cold exposure."
Claire looked down at Lily.
"What if he gets custody?"
Maya's expression softened.
"This petition is aggressive, but it is not magic."
Claire swallowed.
"He is her father."
"Do you want him in her life?"
The question hurt because the answer had once been obvious.
"I want Lily to have a father who doesn't put her outside in winter because his mother handed him a piece of paper."
Maya nodded.
"Then our job is to deal with the father who exists, not the one you hoped he would become."
The first hearing took place two days later.
Ethan wore a dark suit.
Margaret sat directly behind him in the gallery wearing cream gloves and a pearl brooch.
Claire noticed she had chosen pale colors.
Soft colors.
Colors that looked harmless on camera.
Thomas Greer argued first.
He described a marriage in crisis.
He referred to "questions surrounding paternity."
He suggested Claire had withheld access to Lily.
Maya waited.
Then she stood.
"Your Honor, there is no legitimate paternity question."
She handed the court written confirmation from Dr. Keller's office.
"The document used to expel my client and a six-day-old infant from the residence was not generated from any test authorized by Claire Bennett."
Thomas objected.
The judge looked at him.
"Do you have verification from the laboratory?"
Thomas hesitated.
"Not yet."
The judge's eyebrows rose.
"You filed an emergency custody petition while relying on an unverified document?"
Thomas glanced at Ethan.
Margaret leaned forward.
Maya continued.
"My client is willing to complete an immediate court-supervised paternity test."
Claire turned toward her.
They had discussed this.
Still, hearing it aloud made her chest tighten.
Maya looked at Ethan.
"If Mr. Hale is equally interested in truth, he should have no objection."
Ethan stood before Thomas could stop him.
"I agree."
Margaret's face changed.
Only Claire seemed to notice.
The judge ordered a same-day test from an accredited lab.
Until results returned, Lily remained with Claire.
Ethan received supervised visitation at a family center.
The judge also ordered both parties not to post about the case.
Margaret whispered something to Thomas.
The judge saw her.
"Mrs. Hale."
Margaret looked up.
"If you are participating in online commentary about this family matter, stop."
Margaret's lips tightened.
"Of course, Your Honor."
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
Claire kept her head down.
Ethan caught up near the parking lot.
"Claire."
Maya stepped between them.
"Not without counsel."
Ethan stopped.
He looked exhausted.
For the first time, Claire noticed how badly he had slept.
"Just tell me one thing."
Claire looked at him.
"Did you ever think Lily wasn't mine before Mom showed me the report?"
Claire stared.
"No."
His face moved slightly.
Regret.
Or fear.
Claire could not tell.
"You didn't?"
"No."
"Then why did you believe her so fast?"
Ethan looked toward the courthouse steps.
Margaret was walking toward them.
His expression closed.
"I don't know."
Margaret reached his side.
"Don't engage."
Claire almost smiled at the command.
Ethan obeyed.
That told Claire more than his answer.
The paternity test required cheek swabs from Claire, Ethan, and Lily.
The technician sealed each sample in front of them.
Margaret watched from the hallway.
When the technician carried the samples away, Margaret stepped toward Claire.
"You still have time to stop this."
Claire blinked.
"Stop what?"
"You don't understand what you're doing."
"Testing the lie you created?"
Margaret's face remained calm.
"You think this is about a baby."
Claire held Lily closer.
"What is it about?"
Margaret leaned slightly forward.
"Your father."
Before Claire could respond, Maya appeared.
"Step away from my client."
Margaret smiled politely.
"Of course."
She walked away.
Claire watched her.
"What did she mean?"
Maya shook her head.
"We don't speculate when we can investigate."
The test results arrived twenty-six hours later.
Claire opened them in Maya's office.
Probability of paternity: 99.9998%.
Ethan was Lily's biological father.
Claire expected relief.
Instead, she felt numb.
Maya called Thomas.
Within an hour, Ethan withdrew every statement questioning Lily's paternity.
He did not withdraw the custody petition.
That was the part Claire could not understand.
If he knew Margaret had lied, why was he still fighting?
The answer arrived in the form of a voicemail from Ethan.
"I know she's mine."
His voice shook.
"I know Mom lied about the test."
Claire listened without breathing.
"But I can't let you take Lily away."
Claire whispered at the phone, "You put her out."
Ethan continued.
"There's something about your father's trust you don't know."
A pause.
"Something that happens if we divorce."
The message ended.
Claire looked at Maya.
"What happens if we divorce?"
Maya opened the trust again.
They had reviewed the ownership clauses.
The company shares.
The house.
The voting rights.
Then Maya stopped on a page near the back.
She read it once.
Then again.
Her expression changed.
"What?"
Maya turned the document toward Claire.
There was an amendment Daniel had signed four months before his death.
If Claire's marriage ended while a minor child of the marriage existed, management control of Bennett Family Holdings would transfer immediately and exclusively to Claire.
No spouse could exercise voting rights on behalf of the child.
No marital agreement could override it.
Claire stared at the page.
"Why would Ethan care?"
Maya looked at the company records.
"Because your trust owns enough preferred shares to block asset sales."
Claire frowned.
"And?"
"And if you divorce him, you personally control those votes."
Claire's stomach tightened.
Maya tapped the nine-million-dollar lien report.
"If the company is in trouble, Ethan may not be fighting for Lily because he thinks you are unsafe."
May you like
Claire looked at her.
"He may be fighting to keep the marriage legally intact long enough to use the trust."
