Chapter 8 - The Account Claire Was Never Supposed to See

The USB drive from Box 417 came back from the forensic examiner on Friday.
Maya insisted they open the copied image on an offline laptop.
Claire expected old contracts.
Instead, the first folder was labeled MARGARET.
Inside were bank statements.
Dozens of them.
Transfers moved from Hale North Properties into a consulting company called MHC Strategic Services.
Claire recognized the initials immediately.
Margaret Hale Consulting.
The amounts started small.
Twelve thousand.
Twenty-five thousand.
Forty-eight thousand.
Then, over the last eighteen months, the numbers grew.
One transfer was for three hundred and sixty thousand dollars.
Another was for six hundred thousand.
Claire stared.
"What exactly does Margaret consult on?"
Maya looked at her.
"Do you know?"
"No."
They opened invoices.
Most contained vague descriptions.
Executive strategy.
Market positioning.
Capital relationship management.
Maya's mouth flattened.
"These are convenient words."
Claire scrolled farther.
Then she found a spreadsheet.
It listed every major Hale North account.
Beside several entries were initials.
EH.
MH.
DB.
The DB lines had been marked inactive after Daniel's death.
One tab was titled BR TRUST.
Claire clicked.
A red-highlighted row showed the Birch Street house.
Estimated value: $1,280,000.
Available equity target: $790,000.
Status: pending signature solution.
Claire whispered, "Signature solution?"
Maya leaned closer.
A note in the next column read:
C won't sign.
M can replicate.
Claire pushed back from the laptop.
"That is my signature."
Maya nodded slowly.
"Or an instruction to forge it."
Claire remembered the access record at Box 417.
The hooked C.
Margaret's handwriting.
The note inside the box.
You should have stayed grateful.
"What did they use the money for?"
They searched deeper.
The USB contained emails exported from Daniel's old company server.
Some were years old.
Others appeared to have been copied later by someone with access to Hale North's finance system.
A recent email from Ethan to Margaret stopped Claire cold.
Subject: Birch.
Mom,
I told you again I won't have Claire sign a refinance this close to delivery.
She will ask why.
Find another way to bridge the March payment.
E.
Claire read it twice.
"He knew she was looking for another way."
Maya nodded.
"He may not have known that 'another way' meant forgery."
"But he knew they wanted my house."
"Yes."
Claire kept reading.
Margaret's reply was shorter.
You worry too much.
Daniel built every protection around Claire because he assumed you would betray her.
Don't prove him right by being weak.
Claire felt sick.
Ethan responded:
Do what you have to do.
Just keep Claire out of it.
The sentence seemed to expand on the screen.
Do what you have to do.
Maya sat back.
"That is going to matter."
Claire looked at her.
"He'll say he didn't mean fraud."
"He probably will."
"He'll say he meant find another lender."
"Probably."
"But he knew I was being kept in the dark."
"Yes."
Claire closed the email.
A second folder held scanned checks.
Many were signed by Ethan.
Several were signed by Margaret.
Then Claire saw her own name.
Claire Bennett.
Her signature appeared on three authorizations.
She had signed none of them.
The largest authorized a pledge of trust assets as temporary collateral.
Amount: $2,100,000.
Claire's breathing changed.
"Can they do that?"
"Not legally, if your signature is forged."
Maya's phone rang.
She answered.
"Reed."
She listened.
Her expression sharpened.
"When?"
Another pause.
"Send me everything."
She hung up.
"That was the title company."
Claire waited.
"The attempted sale of Birch Street was not a normal listing."
"What was it?"
"Margaret had already found a buyer."
Claire's stomach dropped.
"Who?"
"A company called Cole Urban Capital."
Claire did not recognize it.
Maya did.
"Richard Cole."
"Who is that?"
"A private developer."
Claire searched the name.
A photograph appeared.
Richard Cole stood beside a younger woman with blonde hair.
The caption identified her as his daughter, Serena Cole.
Claire knew Serena.
Not well.
But enough.
Serena had attended Hale North's holiday party.
She had stood too close to Ethan near the bar.
Margaret had spent most of the night praising Serena's education, her family, her taste, and her "discipline."
Claire remembered teasing Ethan in the car afterward.
"Your mother has a crush on Serena."
Ethan had laughed too hard.
Now Claire stared at Serena's photo.
Maya searched corporate records.
Cole Urban Capital had filed to purchase Birch Street through a private transaction.
The contract price was shockingly low.
Eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Far below market value.
"Why would Margaret sell my house to Richard Cole at a discount?" Claire asked.
Maya looked at the debt documents.
"Because maybe the sale isn't the real transaction."
She searched more.
Five minutes later, she found a joint venture announced six weeks earlier.
Hale North Properties and Cole Urban Capital planned a luxury townhome project.
Estimated financing: fourteen million dollars.
Claire's pulse accelerated.
"Margaret is selling my house to the family financing Ethan's company."
Maya nodded.
"Looks that way."
"Does Ethan know?"
"We don't know yet."
Claire's phone buzzed.
A new message from an unknown number appeared.
Do not trust Ethan's version of what happened.
I can prove Margaret planned this before Lily was born.
Claire stared at it.
Then another message appeared.
May you like
My name is Serena Cole.
And I was supposed to replace you.
