Chapter 1 - THE PERFECT HUSBAND

Richard Harrington wrapped his arm around Khloe beneath the cold Nantucket stars and promised he would spend the rest of his life making her happy.
Khloe believed every word.
At twenty-eight, she had never cared much about the wealth attached to the Cole name.
Her father had built a fortune in medical technology before his death.
Her mother had turned that fortune into the Cole Family Trust, a private investment empire worth more than most people could imagine.
But money had never impressed Khloe.
Richard had.
He made her laugh.
He remembered small things.
He brought her coffee exactly the way she liked it.
He called her when he landed.
He opened doors.
He sent flowers for no reason.
And whenever Harrison, her older brother, looked at Richard with quiet suspicion, Khloe accused him of being overprotective.
Harrison never denied it.
He had practically raised her after their parents died.
He had been nineteen when their mother became sick.
Khloe had been eleven.
From that moment on, Harrison had stopped being merely her brother.
He became the person who checked the locks twice.
The person who waited outside school.
The person who learned how to braid hair badly because Khloe refused to let anyone else touch it before picture day.
Years later, he became one of Pennsylvania's most feared trial attorneys.
Powerful corporations hired entire law firms when they discovered Harrison Cole was representing the other side.
Yet with Khloe, he was still simply Harry.
Three nights before her wedding, Harrison had taken her aside.
"There is something about Richard I don't trust."
Khloe had rolled her eyes.
"You don't trust anyone."
"I trust people who earn it."
"He loves me."
Harrison had studied her face.
Then his expression softened.
"I hope I'm wrong."
"You are."
"I hope so."
He reached into his jacket and handed her a small envelope.
Inside was a document.
A trust amendment.
If anything happened to Khloe, her personal voting interest in the Cole Family Trust would return to Harrison instead of transferring automatically to her spouse.
Khloe frowned.
"This is morbid."
"It's protection."
"From Richard?"
"From everyone."
She almost refused to sign it.
Instead, she used Harrison's blue fountain pen and wrote her name across the final page.
Harrison took the document back.
"Keep one thing in mind."
"What?"
"Anyone who gets angry about boundaries was benefiting from you having none."
Khloe kissed his cheek.
Then she went back to her wedding.
For almost three years, Harrison's warning seemed unnecessary.
Richard was attentive.
Their marriage looked effortless.
Then Harrington Commercial Group began struggling.
Two luxury developments stalled.
A lender pulled out of a Philadelphia hotel project.
Richard came home one night looking exhausted and embarrassed.
"I need help."
Khloe didn't hesitate.
She invested twelve million dollars from her personal holdings.
Richard cried when she signed the transfer.
He held her afterward and whispered against her hair.
"You just saved everything my father built."
Khloe thought she had saved her husband's company.
May you like
She did not know she had just taught him what she was worth.
And she certainly did not know that, two floors below Richard's office, a young acquisitions consultant named Vanessa Kensington had already begun studying Khloe's signature.
