Chapter 19 - THE LAST TRAP

Harrison suspected Richard.

Ruiz suspected Marcus.

Khloe suspected someone else.

"Vanessa."

They were sitting in Harrison's kitchen.

Caroline slept in a bassinet beside the table.

Harrison looked at his sister.

"Vanessa is under financial monitoring."

"Then she isn't moving the money herself."

"Who is?"

Khloe remembered the charity dinner six years earlier.

Vanessa had mentioned the Cole Foundation.

She had known details Richard claimed were public.

But they were not public.

Someone inside the Cole family's financial network had been feeding information long before the affair became obvious.

Harrison reopened the original trust records.

They found the leak.

Thomas Wren.

A senior accountant who had managed parts of the Cole Family Trust for fourteen years.

Wren had provided Richard with financial statements.

Signature samples.

Distribution schedules.

He had also created the first connection between Khloe's accounts and Stonebridge Capital.

When investigators confronted him, Wren panicked.

He agreed to cooperate.

The final trap was simple.

Wren told Vanessa that one unreported archive still existed.

Original transfer ledgers.

Paper authorization records.

Enough to prove every fraudulent movement.

He told her the archive would be delivered to federal prosecutors at nine the next morning.

At 11:37 p.m., a black SUV stopped outside Wren's office.

Vanessa stepped out.

She was followed by Richard's former security director.

They entered using a copied key.

Federal agents were already inside.

Vanessa found the storage box.

Opened it.

And realized it was empty.

The lights came on.

She froze.

Ruiz stepped forward.

"It's over."

Vanessa laughed once.

"No."

"It was over the second Khloe survived."

Vanessa's face changed.

For the first time, the truth appeared.

Fear.

Not of Harrison.

Not of prison.

Of Khloe.

Because the woman Vanessa had tried to remove had survived everything.

The fall.

The surgery.

The betrayal.

The humiliation.

The lies.

And now Khloe would testify.

At Vanessa's trial, the courtroom was packed.

Khloe walked to the witness stand wearing a simple navy dress.

The same color she had worn the morning Vanessa pushed her.

Vanessa stared at her.

Khloe did not look away.

The prosecutor asked one final question.

"What did you think as you fell down those stairs?"

Khloe looked toward Harrison.

Then toward Caroline, sleeping in the arms of a trusted family friend.

"I thought my daughter was going to die before I ever got to meet her."

The courtroom became silent.

Khloe continued.

"And then I thought about my brother."

"Why?"

"Because Harrison made me a promise when we were children."

"What promise?"

Khloe's eyes filled with tears.

"That if I ever fell, he would come get me."

Harrison lowered his head.

May you like

Khloe looked back at Vanessa.

"And he did."
