Chapter 3 - THE FIRST LIE

Richard did not admit to sleeping with Vanessa.

He became offended instead.

"Do you understand how humiliating this is?"

Khloe stared at him across their kitchen.

"For you?"

"You're accusing me because of a hair."

"She came out of your private elevator wearing your jacket."

"It was raining."

"The conference rooms are indoors."

Richard's jaw tightened.

Khloe had never seen that expression during the first years of their marriage.

Cold.

Calculating.

Almost annoyed that she was making him work harder to deceive her.

"You are pregnant."

"So?"

"Hormones can distort things."

Khloe slowly stepped back.

It was the first time Richard used her pregnancy against her.

It would not be the last.

The next morning, he apologized.

He made breakfast.

He kissed her stomach.

He blamed stress.

Khloe wanted peace badly enough to accept the apology.

But she stopped trusting him.

Quietly, she began paying attention.

She noticed he had changed the password on his tablet.

She noticed he had opened a second checking account.

She noticed late-night calls listed only as V.K.

And she noticed Harrington Commercial Group had begun receiving enormous investments from companies she had never heard of.

Stonebridge Capital.

Marwick Holdings.

Davenport Urban Partners.

Khloe had studied finance before choosing philanthropy.

Something about the transactions looked wrong.

The companies invested millions.

Then Harrington Commercial Group immediately paid consulting fees to other companies with no public employees.

One night, while Richard was showering, Khloe photographed several pages from a folder inside his briefcase.

She sent them to herself.

Then she deleted the sent message from his phone.

The following morning, she called Harrison.

He answered on the first ring.

"What's wrong?"

Khloe tried to sound casual.

"Why do you always assume something's wrong?"

"Because you only call me at seven in the morning when something's wrong."

She looked toward the bedroom.

Richard was still sleeping.

"I need you to look at some financial documents."

Silence.

"Richard's?"

"Maybe."

Another silence.

Then Harrison's voice changed.

"Send them."

Thirty minutes later, he called back.

"Khloe."

Her stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Where did you get these?"

"Why?"

"Because Stonebridge Capital doesn't exist in any meaningful sense."

She gripped the phone.

"What does that mean?"

"It means it's a shell."

"For what?"

"I don't know yet."

"Richard said they were investors."

"Then Richard is lying."

Khloe closed her eyes.

Harrison continued.

"Don't confront him."

"Harry."

"I mean it."

"Why?"

"Because one of the transfers originates from an account indirectly funded by your own trust distribution."

Khloe opened her eyes.

"What?"

"Someone is moving your money through companies you don't control."

"That's impossible."

"No."

Harrison's voice hardened.

"It's illegal."

Khloe looked toward the bedroom again.

Her husband was standing in the doorway.

Watching her.
