Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN ON THE ELEVATOR

Khloe first met Vanessa Kensington at a charity dinner in Philadelphia.
Vanessa wore a silver dress, an expensive smile, and the kind of confidence that made every conversation feel like a negotiation.
Richard introduced her casually.
"Vanessa is helping us with the Kensington redevelopment."
Vanessa laughed.
"No relation to me, unfortunately."
Khloe smiled politely.
But something about the woman bothered her.
It was not jealousy.
Not yet.
It was familiarity.
Vanessa looked at Richard as though she already knew how he took his coffee.
She interrupted him without apology.
She touched his sleeve when she laughed.
And once, when Richard stepped away to answer a call, Vanessa looked directly at Khloe's diamond bracelet.
"Beautiful."
"It was my mother's."
Vanessa's smile changed slightly.
"You inherited quite a lot from her, didn't you?"
Khloe's eyes narrowed.
"Excuse me?"
Vanessa immediately lifted her champagne.
"I'm sorry."
"Richard mentioned the Cole Foundation."
"Business gossip."
That night, Khloe asked Richard why Vanessa knew about her inheritance.
Richard laughed.
"Everybody knows your family has money."
"She knew specifics."
"You're imagining something that isn't there."
Khloe hated that sentence.
She heard it more often over the next year.
When Richard started returning home after midnight, she was imagining something.
When Vanessa called him during dinner, she was imagining something.
When she found a hotel receipt from Manhattan even though Richard claimed he had spent that night in Boston, she was imagining something.
Each lie was small enough to explain.
Together, they formed a pattern Khloe did not want to see.
Then she became pregnant.
Everything changed.
Richard cried when she showed him the test.
He dropped to his knees and pressed his forehead against her stomach.
"We're finally going to be a family."
For several weeks, Khloe allowed herself to believe their marriage had found its way back.
Richard came home earlier.
He attended appointments.
He painted the nursery himself.
He even suggested they name the baby Caroline after Khloe's mother.
Then, one afternoon, Khloe visited his office unexpectedly.
The receptionist looked startled.
"Mrs. Harrington."
"Is Richard upstairs?"
The receptionist hesitated.
That hesitation was all Khloe needed.
She walked toward the private elevators.
The doors opened.
Vanessa was inside.
Her lipstick was smeared.
Richard's suit jacket was draped over her shoulders.
Neither woman spoke.
Vanessa slowly removed the jacket.
She handed it to Khloe.
"He left this in the conference room."
Khloe stared at her.
"Did he?"
Vanessa smiled.
The elevator doors closed.
Khloe stood there holding her husband's jacket.
Then she noticed something caught beneath the collar.
A long blonde hair.
Khloe's hair was dark brown.
That evening, Richard came home carrying flowers.
Khloe placed the blonde hair on the kitchen counter.
Richard stared at it.

Then he laughed.
That laugh ended something inside her.
