Chapter 18 - Code Blue

Simultaneously — St. Jude VIP Medical Pavilion

Marcus didn't use the front doors.

He and three of his most elite security contractors came up through the basement freight elevator, completely bypassing the hospital's reception.

When the elevator doors silently opened on the VIP floor, Marcus peered around the corner. Two of Arthur's mercenaries were stationed outside Room 412.

Marcus held up two fingers, then pointed to his left flank. His men nodded.

They moved like ghosts. In under three seconds, Marcus crossed the linoleum hallway. Before the first mercenary could even reach for his weapon, Marcus drove a brutal strike into the man's throat, following up with a heavy elbow to the temple. The man dropped instantly.

His partner unholstered his weapon, but Marcus's team was already there, tackling him to the floor and disarming him in one fluid, violent motion.

Marcus didn't stop. He kicked the door to Room 412 open.

Inside, a third man was standing over the hospital bed, his hand hovering over the power supply of the dialysis machine. Emma’s mother lay in the bed, looking terrified but stubbornly clutching her call button.

"Don't move," the mercenary barked, drawing a suppressed pistol and aiming it at Marcus. "Sterling said—"

Marcus didn't give him a chance to finish the sentence. He threw a heavy titanium flashlight directly at the man's face. It struck him perfectly between the eyes. As the man stumbled backward, dropping the gun, Marcus closed the distance, pinning him against the medical monitors and throwing him into a sleeper hold.

Ten seconds later, the man went limp.

Marcus let the unconscious body slide to the floor, adjusting his suit jacket. He looked down at Emma's mother, who was staring at him in wide-eyed shock.

"Apologies for the noise, ma'am," Marcus said politely, tapping his earpiece. "Boss. Eagle is secure. I repeat, the mother is completely safe. You are clear to engage."
