Chapter 5 - The Voice

I dropped the phone.

The banging on the door continued, loud enough to wake the entire building.

"Mr. Callahan, please wait!" I shouted, backing away from the door and instinctively standing in front of Lily, who had curled up into a tight ball on the sofa.

CRACK.

The cheap wooden door frame splintered as Grant Callahan kicked it in. He stood in the doorway, the hallway lights casting a long, terrifying shadow into my tiny living room. He wasn't wearing his gala tuxedo jacket. His tie was loosened, his eyes wild with a mixture of panic and rage.

"Where is she?" he demanded, stepping into the room.

Then he saw her.

"Lily," Grant exhaled, his entire demeanor shifting. He dropped to his knees, ignoring me completely, and reached out for his daughter. "Oh, thank God. Sweetheart, come here."

Lily didn't move toward him.

Instead, she slid off the couch, ran behind me, and grabbed fistfuls of my jeans. She used my body as a human shield, peeking out at her father with terrified eyes.

Grant froze. He looked at me, his jaw tightening into a lethal line. "What the hell did you do to my daughter?"

"I didn't do anything to her!" I yelled, refusing to back down, refusing to be intimidated by his money or his power. "I saved her from the monster you're planning to marry!"

"Renata told me everything," Grant snarled, rising to his feet. "She told me you snapped. That you burned my child and took her."

"And you believed her?!" I screamed, tears finally spilling over my cheeks. "Look at Lily, Grant! Really look at her! Does she look afraid of me, or is she hiding behind me because she knows I’m the only one who protected her while you were busy rubbing elbows with billionaires?"

Grant blinked, taken aback by my outburst. He looked at Lily, who was still clinging to my leg in a death grip.

"Mr. Callahan," I said, my voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "Call Marcus. Ask him about the hidden camera in the master bathroom. Look at the footage from six o'clock tonight. Check the cloud server. Then you can have me arrested."

Grant stared at me. He pulled out his phone. His thumbs flew across the screen as he accessed his private security network. The living room was dead silent as the video loaded.

I watched his face.

I watched as the annoyance in his eyes shifted to confusion.

Then to horror.

Then, finally, to a murderous, violent rage.

The phone slipped from his hand, clattering against the cheap linoleum floor.

He slowly looked up at me, then down at his daughter. He saw the blistered burn behind her ear. He fell to his knees again, tears welling in the eyes of the most ruthless man in New York.

"Lily..." he choked out, his voice breaking. "I'm so sorry. I didn't know."

For a long moment, nobody moved.

Then, Lily stepped out from behind me. She walked over to her father, placed her tiny hand on his cheek, and opened her mouth.

"Emma... saved me," Lily whispered.

They were the first words she had spoken in two years.
