Chapter 6 - The Awakening

"Emma... saved me."
Those three words hung in the stale air of my tiny apartment, carrying more weight than a falling building.
Grant Callahan, a man who regularly intimidated Wall Street executives and politicians without blinking, buried his face in his hands and wept. The sound was guttural, raw, and completely unfiltered. He pulled Lily into his chest, being careful not to touch the left side of her head, rocking her back and forth on the cheap linoleum floor.
"I'm sorry," Grant choked out, his broad shoulders shaking. "God, Lily, I am so sorry."
I stood there, my back pressed against the splintered door frame, my heart hammering in my throat. I had fully expected to be in handcuffs by now. Instead, I was watching a billionaire completely unravel.
After a long moment, Grant kissed the top of Lily's head and slowly stood up. He wiped his face, his expression shifting from a devastated father to the ruthless chairman of Callahan Industrial. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
He picked up his phone from the floor. The screen was cracked, but it still worked. He dialed a number.
"Marcus," Grant's voice was deadly calm. It was the voice of a man preparing for war. "I have them. They are safe."
Pause.
"No, do not let the police leave. Keep them at the estate," Grant ordered. "And Marcus? Lock down the perimeter. Do not let Renata leave the grounds. Tell her I'm bringing the nanny back to face charges. Let her think she’s won."
He hung up and looked at me. His piercing blue eyes scanned my dilapidated apartment—the peeling wallpaper, the leaky radiator, the sheer desperation of my living conditions.
"Grab whatever you need, Emma," he said softly, all the previous anger completely vanished. "You and Lily are not staying here tonight. You're coming with me."
May you like
"Where are we going?" I asked, my hands still shaking.
Grant’s jaw tightened. "To a place where Renata Cole can never reach either of you again. And then, I am going to destroy her."
