Chapter 8 - The Viper in the Nest

The Next Evening
The charity gala at the Callahan estate had been extended into a two-day weekend event. The ballroom was packed with the elite of New York—senators, hedge fund managers, and celebrities.
And holding court in the center of it all was Renata Cole.
She wore a backless crimson gown that cost more than my entire college tuition. She was playing the role of the tragic, brave fiancée to perfection, sipping champagne and whispering lies to anyone who would listen.
"It was just awful," Renata sighed to the Mayor's wife, pressing a hand to her chest. "The nanny just went completely psychotic. She burned poor little Lily, and when I tried to stop her, she attacked me. Grant is out hunting her down right now."
"You poor dear," the Mayor's wife cooed. "She belongs in an asylum."
Renata smiled, a cold, triumphant smirk hidden behind her champagne flute.
She felt invincible. She had successfully framed the pathetic little maid. Soon, the nanny would be in jail, Lily would be sent off to some strict boarding school in Switzerland, and Renata would have Grant’s billions entirely to herself.
Her phone buzzed in her glittering clutch.
A text from Grant: "I have Emma. I'm bringing her straight to the gala. Have the police captain meet us in the main ballroom. I want this handled publicly."
Renata’s eyes lit up with malicious glee. Publicly. Perfect. She would get to watch the little rat get dragged out in handcuffs in front of the entire state's high society.
She immediately flagged down the Chief of Police, who was enjoying the open bar.
"Chief," Renata said, projecting her voice so the surrounding wealthy guests could hear. "My fiancé just texted. He’s captured the deranged woman who attacked me and kidnapped his daughter. They are arriving any minute. Please, make sure she doesn't hurt anyone else."

The Chief nodded sternly, signaling for four uniformed officers to flank the grand entrance of the ballroom. A hush fell over the crowd. The music faded. Everyone turned toward the massive, gilded double doors.
Renata stood at the top of the grand staircase, ready to claim her victory.
