Chapter 19 - The Fall of the Kingmaker

Callahan Industrial Tower — The Lobby

"Eagle is secure."

Grant heard the words through his earpiece just as the three men in the lobby drew their weapons.

The shift in Grant’s demeanor was instantaneous. The stalling was over. The game was won.

Before the lead thug could raise his gun, the reinforced glass doors of the lobby shattered inward. Six heavily armed SWAT officers, led by the State Police Commissioner, swarmed into the room, assault rifles raised.

"Drop your weapons! Put your hands on the ground!" the Commissioner roared.

The thugs froze. Outnumbered and outgunned, they slowly lowered their pistols to the marble floor and dropped to their knees.

Grant walked past them, stepping on the burner phone that had fallen to the ground, crushing it beneath the heel of his Oxford shoe.

He looked at the Commissioner. "He’s on the top floor. He might try for the helipad."

"We already have snipers on the roof, Mr. Callahan," the Commissioner replied grimly. "Arthur Sterling isn't going anywhere."

Grant turned to me. The adrenaline was finally crashing, leaving me dizzy and breathless. He caught me by the waist, pulling me close.

"She's safe," Grant whispered fiercely into my hair. "Marcus has her. It's over, Emma. It's finally over."

Ten minutes later, the elevators pinged.

Two SWAT officers dragged Arthur Sterling out. The elegant, untouchable Vice Chairman looked completely disheveled, his tie crooked, his face purple with rage. When he saw Grant, he thrashed against his captors.

"You think this changes anything?" Arthur spat. "I built half this company, Grant! I made you!"

Grant walked up to him, stopping inches away. He didn't yell. He didn't throw a punch. He just looked at Arthur with the cold, absolute detachment of a man looking at a ghost.

"You built nothing," Grant said quietly. "You just stole from people better than you. Goodbye, Arthur."

As they dragged Arthur out the front doors and shoved him into the back of a squad car, the flashing red and blue lights illuminated the street.

The nightmare that had haunted the Callahan family for two years was finally dead.
