Chapter 3 - The GalaMiles away, the Callahan estate was a glittering beacon of wealth and power. Valets parked Aston Martins and Ferraris. Waiters in crisp tuxedos floated through the ballroom.

But inside the master study, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Grant Callahan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the dark Hudson River. He was a man carved from granite—imposing, ruthlessly intelligent, and currently radiating a quiet, terrifying fury.
"She just snapped, Grant!" Renata sobbed, dabbing her perfectly dry eyes with a silk handkerchief. She was seated on a leather sofa, sipping brandy. "I was gently brushing Lily's hair, and Emma just... attacked me! She screamed that Lily belonged to her. Then she shoved me and dragged Lily out. It was terrifying!"
Grant turned around. His piercing blue eyes locked onto his fiancée.
"And she didn't try to take anything else?" Grant's voice was dangerously low. "No jewelry? No demands for ransom?"
"She's crazy, Grant! She's obsessed with your daughter!"
Grant slowly walked over to his mahogany desk. He wasn't a man who built an empire by taking things at face value. Something was wrong. Emma was desperate for money—he knew that from her background check. She needed her health insurance for her sick mother. A woman like that doesn't just throw her life away on a whim.
"Did she hurt Lily?" Grant asked.
Renata hesitated for a fraction of a second. "I... I don't know. I was on the floor. But we have to find them, Grant! Call the governor. Have the National Guard brought in!"
There was a heavy knock on the study door. Marcus, Grant’s head of security, stepped in.
"Sir, we checked the nanny's background again. Squeaky clean. But I found something in the master bathroom," Marcus said, glancing warily at Renata.
"What?" Grant demanded.
Marcus held up a plastic evidence bag. Inside was Renata’s professional curling iron.
"It was on the floor, sir. And it was set to 450 degrees. But that’s not all..." Marcus lowered his voice. "There's scorched hair melted to the ceramic barrel. Blonde hair. Children's hair."

Grant stopped breathing. He looked at the curling iron, and then, very slowly, he turned his gaze toward Renata.
The color drained completely from her face.
