Chapter 2: The Deleted Footage

Chapter 2: The Deleted Footage
Renata ran.
The moment Emma shouted, she spun toward the hallway, her silk robe sweeping across the polished marble floor as she sprinted for the grand staircase.
"Stop her!" Officer Daniels roared.
Two officers lunged forward, but Renata was faster than anyone expected. She kicked off her high-heeled slippers and darted barefoot through the mansion, knocking over an antique vase that shattered against the wall.
Grant stood frozen for only a heartbeat.
Then instinct took over.
"Lock every exit!" he shouted.
Chief Harris immediately spoke into his radio.
"Code Black. Seal the estate. Nobody leaves without my authorization."
Within seconds, heavy security doors began sliding shut throughout the Ashford mansion. Outside, guards stationed at the front gate received the order and rushed into position.
Renata heard the electronic locks engage.
Her pulse spiked.
She wasn't running because of Lily's accusation.
Children could be dismissed.
Trauma distorted memories.
But the deleted security footage...
That was different.
If Harris had recovered even part of it, everything she had spent two years hiding could collapse.
Back in the dressing room, Emma remained kneeling beside Lily.
The little girl still trembled uncontrollably.
Grant looked at his daughter, his heart breaking.
"Lily..."
She finally looked up.
Her hazel eyes were red and swollen.
"I didn't lie."
"I know."
The words escaped before Grant could stop them.
For the first time since his wife Sophia's death, he questioned everything he thought he knew.
Emma gently brushed Lily's burned hair away from her forehead.
"She needs a doctor."
Grant immediately nodded.
"Call Dr. Morrison. Now."
One of the guards hurried away.
Emma carefully examined the burn.
It wasn't severe, but patches of Lily's hair had been scorched close to the scalp.
The child hadn't cried out.
She had learned long ago that crying only made Renata angrier.
That realization hit Grant harder than any accusation.
His daughter had been living in fear.
Inside his own home.
Meanwhile...
Renata reached the west corridor.
She yanked on an emergency exit.
Locked.
She cursed under her breath.
Another door.
Locked.
Every route was closing.
She pulled a hidden phone from inside her robe and quickly dialed a memorized number.
The call connected after one ring.
A man's voice answered.
"You shouldn't be calling."
"They found something."
Silence.
"How much?"
"I don't know."
"Then destroy the backup."
"Harris already has it."
Another long pause.
Then the voice became cold.
"If the footage survives..."
"...you know what happens."
The line disconnected.
Renata stared at the dark screen.
For the first time in years...
She looked genuinely terrified.
Chief Harris entered the mansion's security command center.
Rows of monitors covered the walls.
"Replay archive file seventeen."
A technician hesitated.
"Sir... the file is badly corrupted."
"Show me everything."
Static filled the screen.
Broken images flickered in and out.
The timestamp read:
Two years earlier.
Rain pounded against the mansion windows.
Sophia Ashford appeared at the top of the east staircase.
She was arguing with someone just outside the camera's view.
The audio was missing.
Only fragments remained.
Sophia shook her head.
She looked frightened.
She took one step backward.
Another figure entered the frame.
Only partially visible.
A woman's arm.
Dark sleeves.
A flash of gold jewelry.
Then—
The image distorted.
Sophia suddenly lost her balance.
Her body disappeared down the staircase.
The recording froze.
Static.
Black screen.
Grant stared without blinking.
"No..."
Harris rewound the clip.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Each time the same fragment appeared.
Sophia wasn't alone.
She hadn't simply slipped.
Someone had been standing directly in front of her.
Officer Daniels folded his arms.
"This changes everything."
Grant couldn't speak.
His breathing became shallow.
For two years he had lived with unbearable guilt.
He believed his wife had accidentally fallen after taking medication for migraines.
That was the official conclusion.
That was what Renata had repeated endlessly.
Now...
Nothing felt certain.
Emma quietly entered the security room carrying Lily wrapped in a blanket.
The child immediately hid behind Emma when she noticed the monitors.
Grant slowly approached.
"Lily..."
She wouldn't look at the screen.
"I don't want to see."
"You don't have to."
Emma knelt beside her.
"Can you tell us what happened instead?"
Lily closed her eyes.
Her tiny fingers gripped Emma's sleeve.
"I heard Mommy crying."
The room became silent.
"I woke up because they were yelling."
Grant felt tears filling his eyes again.
Lily continued.
"I went to the hallway."
"What did you see?"
She swallowed.
"Mommy was holding the railing."
"And?"
"Renata said..."
Lily suddenly stopped.
Emma gently rubbed her back.
"It's okay."
The little girl whispered so softly they almost couldn't hear.
"She said..."
"...'If I can't have him, neither can you.'"
Grant's face turned white.
Every person in the room exchanged uneasy glances.
Those weren't the words of an accident.
They were the words of someone consumed by jealousy.
Harris slowly looked back toward the frozen frame on the monitor.
The investigation that had been closed for two years had just reopened.
And somewhere inside the locked mansion...
May you like
Renata realized she no longer had much time before every lie she had built began to collapse.
