Chapter 3: The Woman in the Rain

Chapter 3: The Woman in the Rain
Renata stood alone in the dark west corridor, gripping the phone so tightly her knuckles turned white.
The estate was sealed.
Security guards blocked every exit.
Grant had seen the footage.
Lily had spoken.
Everything was unraveling.
Two years.
Two years of carefully constructed lies.
Two years of manipulating doctors, controlling narratives, and convincing everyone that Lily's silence was simply grief.
She had survived every suspicion.
But she never planned for the child to speak.
Not tonight.
Not in front of witnesses.
Not with police standing in the room.
For the first time in years, Renata felt genuine fear.
Because she knew something no one else did.
The recovered footage wasn't the only evidence.
There was another secret.
A secret hidden far away from the Ashford mansion.
A secret she had protected more fiercely than anything.
Because if that truth came out—
Everything would be over.
In the security room, Grant couldn't take his eyes off the frozen image on the monitor.
Sophia.
His wife.
Her terrified face illuminated by the dim hallway lights.
He remembered that smile.
He remembered the way she laughed when Lily tried to bake cookies and covered the entire kitchen in flour.
He remembered promising to protect them.
And he had failed.
He failed Sophia.
He failed Lily.
The realization felt unbearable.
Officer Daniels spoke carefully.
"We're reopening the investigation immediately."
Grant nodded silently.
Chief Harris crossed his arms.
"I already sent copies of the recovered footage to an external secure server."
Grant looked at him.
"Copies?"
Harris nodded.
"If someone deleted the footage once, I wasn't taking any chances."
A heavy silence filled the room.
Emma gently adjusted the blanket around Lily's shoulders.
The little girl still refused to let go of her hand.
Not even for a second.
Grant noticed.
A painful truth struck him.
For two years, his daughter had trusted Emma more than she trusted him.
Because Emma had protected her.
While he hadn't.
Dr. Morrison arrived twenty minutes later.
After examining Lily's scalp, she looked furious.
"These are burns."
Grant's jaw tightened.
"Will she be okay?"
"Physically?"
The doctor sighed.
"Yes."
Then she looked directly at him.
"Emotionally is another question."
Grant lowered his eyes.
He couldn't argue with that.
Dr. Morrison gently knelt beside Lily.
"You were very brave tonight."
Lily didn't answer.
But for the first time, she whispered softly.
"Emma stayed."
Emma froze.
Lily wrapped both arms around her waist.
"Emma always stays."
Grant felt something inside him break.
At the same moment, Renata quietly entered the guest wing.
Most of the security guards were focused on the main exits.
Exactly as she'd hoped.
She opened a hidden compartment behind a decorative wall panel.
Inside sat a small fireproof lockbox.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Documents.
Photographs.
A flash drive.
And one old newspaper clipping.
She stared at the headline.
LOCAL WOMAN DIES AFTER MANSION FALL.
Sophia's smiling face stared back at her.
Renata quickly shoved everything into a leather bag.
She needed to destroy it.
Immediately.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Renata froze.
Chief Harris stood at the opposite end.
His expression was unreadable.
"Going somewhere, Mrs. Ashford?"
Renata forced a smile.
"Of course not."
His eyes dropped to the bag.
"Then you won't mind showing me what's inside."
Her heartbeat pounded.
"No warrant."
Harris took another step forward.
"No exit either."
Back in the security room, Officer Daniels received a radio call.
His expression changed instantly.
"What is it?" Grant asked.
Daniels looked up.
"Your wife was found carrying evidence."
Grant closed his eyes.
The word evidence felt like a knife.
Not belongings.
Not personal items.
Evidence.
Emma sat beside Lily while Dr. Morrison applied soothing ointment to the burned area.
Lily winced.
Emma squeezed her hand gently.
"It's almost done."
Lily looked up.
"Will Daddy leave too?"
The question shattered the room.
Grant immediately knelt beside her.
"No."
His voice cracked.
"I'm not leaving."
Lily stared at him.
Children could sense truth.
And lies.
For two years she had stopped trusting promises.
"Really?"
Grant nodded.
"Really."
Tears rolled down his face.
"I'm so sorry, Lily."
The little girl didn't answer.
But she didn't look away either.
It was the first step.
A small one.
Fragile.
But real.
Meanwhile, in the guest wing, Harris carefully took the leather bag from Renata.
She didn't fight him.
Because she already knew.
The fight was over.
Harris slowly opened the bag.
Photographs.
Documents.
The newspaper clipping.
And the flash drive.
He picked it up.
"What's on this?"
Renata remained silent.
Harris looked directly into her eyes.
"What are you hiding?"
For the first time in years—
Renata looked defeated.
Then she whispered five words that made Harris's blood run cold.
"She wasn't supposed to survive."
Harris stared at her.
"What?"
Renata slowly closed her eyes.
And somewhere deep inside the mansion—
Thunder shook the windows.
Because everyone still believed the tragedy began two years ago.
They were wrong.
The real story had started long before Sophia fell down those stairs.

And someone else had been keeping secrets too.
