Chapter 6: The Witness Who Never Disappeared

Chapter 6: The Witness Who Never Disappeared

Rain poured over the Ashford estate, turning the rose garden into a sea of mud as floodlights illuminated the growing crime scene.

Detective Carla Monroe stood silently beside the shallow grave, watching forensic technicians carefully uncover every inch of evidence.

Nothing about the burial was hurried.

The victim had been wrapped carefully.

Weighted with stones.

Hidden beneath newly planted roses.

Whoever buried the body expected it to stay hidden forever.

One of the technicians approached Monroe carrying a small evidence bag.

"We found this."

Inside rested a tarnished silver wristwatch.

The glass was cracked.

The leather strap had almost completely rotted away.

Monroe studied the engraved initials on the back.

M.C.

She looked toward Chief Harris.

"Does that mean anything to you?"

Harris stared at the initials.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then his expression slowly changed.

"Oh, my God..."

Grant immediately stepped forward.

"What?"

Harris swallowed.

"I think I know who this belongs to."

Inside the mansion, Emma remained with Lily in the upstairs sitting room.

The child had finally stopped trembling, but exhaustion weighed heavily on her small body.

Emma handed her a warm cup of cocoa.

Lily wrapped both hands around it.

"Emma?"

"Yes?"

"Did Mommy know she was going to die?"

Emma's heart broke.

"No, sweetheart."

"I think she did."

Emma frowned gently.

"What makes you say that?"

Lily looked toward the rain outside.

"The day before..."

"She hugged me for a long time."

"She told me..."

Lily's voice became barely audible.

"...'If anything ever scares you, tell the truth.'"

Emma froze.

Sophia had known something was wrong.

Maybe not everything.

But enough to fear for her daughter.

Downstairs, Grant paced anxiously outside the temporary investigation room.

Every minute seemed like an hour.

Detective Monroe finally emerged carrying the evidence bag containing the watch.

"Mr. Ashford."

Grant immediately looked up.

"Do you recognize these initials?"

He examined the watch.

His breathing stopped.

"M.C..."

He whispered the name before anyone else could.

"Michael Carter."

Monroe's eyes narrowed.

"Who's Michael Carter?"

Grant looked stunned.

"He was my head chauffeur."

Harris nodded slowly.

"He disappeared almost two years ago."

Grant stared at him.

"I thought he quit."

Harris shook his head.

"No, sir."

"He never collected his final paycheck."

"He never picked up his belongings."

"I reported him missing."

Grant looked confused.

"Why wasn't I told?"

Harris hesitated.

"The report disappeared."

Silence filled the room.

Grant slowly closed his eyes.

Another report.

Another missing file.

Another secret somehow buried inside his own household.

Detective Monroe immediately contacted missing-persons records.

Within minutes, confirmation arrived.

Michael Carter had indeed vanished exactly three days after Sophia's death.

His wife had reported him missing.

Police searched for months.

Nothing.

No bank activity.

No passport usage.

No phone records.

Eventually...

The case went cold.

Monroe looked toward the grave outside.

Not anymore.

Meanwhile...

Officer Daniels entered the study where Renata remained under guard.

He placed the evidence bag on the table.

Renata glanced at the cracked watch.

Only for a fraction of a second.

But it was enough.

The color drained from her face.

Daniels noticed immediately.

"You know whose watch this is."

Renata remained silent.

"You recognized it."

Still nothing.

Daniels leaned closer.

"Michael Carter."

Her jaw tightened.

The silence itself had become an answer.

Across the estate...

Chief Harris unlocked an old filing cabinet inside the security office.

Boxes of archived personnel records filled the shelves.

He searched until he found Michael Carter's employment file.

Most of it appeared ordinary.

Excellent performance reviews.

Twelve years of loyal service.

No disciplinary actions.

Then Harris found the final page.

A handwritten note.

Not part of the official file.

No signature.

Just one sentence.

"If anything happens to me, check Camera Twelve."

Harris stared at the message.

Camera Twelve.

He immediately rushed toward the surveillance room.

Within minutes technicians loaded archived backups connected to Camera Twelve.

Static flashed across the monitor.

The timestamp appeared.

Two years earlier.

Late at night.

The image slowly stabilized.

It overlooked the rear service driveway.

At first...

Nothing happened.

Then headlights entered the frame.

A black SUV.

Grant frowned.

"That's my vehicle."

The driver's door opened.

Michael Carter stepped out.

He wasn't alone.

He walked to the rear passenger door.

Someone inside the SUV was arguing with him.

The camera had no audio.

But their movements were unmistakable.

Michael looked frightened.

He repeatedly shook his head.

Then—

Another figure stepped out.

Umbrella raised.

Face hidden.

Emma, who had quietly entered the room with Lily, gasped.

Lily gripped her hand so tightly it hurt.

"I know that umbrella."

Everyone turned toward the little girl.

Grant knelt beside her.

"How?"

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"It belonged to Mommy."

The room fell silent.

On the monitor...

The unknown figure slowly lowered the umbrella.

The footage was grainy.

Blurry.

But just clear enough for everyone to recognize the face.

Grant staggered backward.

"No..."

Emma covered her mouth.

Chief Harris whispered,

"That's impossible."

Because standing beside Michael Carter...

Was Sophia Ashford.

Alive.

Three days after the date everyone believed she had died.
