Chapter 8: The Letter Hidden Inside the Walls

Chapter 8: The Letter Hidden Inside the Walls
The words from the forensic laboratory echoed through the command center.
"Sophia's blood was found on the blanket."
No one spoke for several seconds.
Grant leaned heavily against the conference table, trying to steady himself.
Everything he had believed for the past two years had been destroyed in less than twelve hours.
His wife might have survived the fall.
The body buried beneath the rose garden belonged to Michael Carter.
Sophia's blood was found with him.
And somewhere between those two facts lay the truth that someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to erase.
Detective Carla Monroe finally broke the silence.
"We need to stop treating this as one murder."
She looked around the room.
"This is a conspiracy."
Chief Harris immediately ordered every employee to remain on the estate until investigators completed interviews.
Nearly forty members of the household staff gathered in the ballroom.
Housekeepers.
Gardeners.
Chefs.
Drivers.
Maintenance workers.
Many looked frightened.
Others looked relieved.
For years they had whispered among themselves, never daring to report what they had seen.
Now the silence was breaking.
Detective Monroe stepped onto the small stage.
"If anyone has information about Sophia Ashford, Michael Carter, or Renata Ashford, this is your opportunity to come forward."
The room remained silent.
No one moved.
Emma stood near the back with Lily, who held her hand tightly.
Then...
An elderly woman slowly raised her hand.
It was Martha.
The mansion's head housekeeper.
She had served the Ashford family for nearly thirty years.
Her voice trembled.
"I tried to tell someone."
Grant turned toward her.
"What do you mean?"
Tears filled Martha's eyes.
"The day after Mrs. Sophia disappeared..."
"...I found a letter."
The ballroom became perfectly still.
Grant stepped closer.
"What letter?"
Martha lowered her head.
"It was hidden inside the nursery."
Emma frowned.
"The nursery?"
Martha nodded.
"Mrs. Sophia had been repairing a loose wall panel beside Lily's bookshelf."
"After she died..."
"I noticed the panel had shifted."
"I looked inside."
Grant's heartbeat quickened.
"What was there?"
"A sealed envelope."
"With your name on it."
Grant felt his stomach tighten.
"My name?"
Martha nodded slowly.
"I was taking it to your office."
"What happened?"
Martha looked across the room.
Straight toward Renata, who was seated under police guard.
"Mrs. Ashford stopped me."
Renata didn't react.
Martha continued.
"She asked what I was carrying."
"I told her."
"She smiled..."
"...and said she'd deliver it personally."
Grant slowly turned toward Renata.
"You told me there was never any letter."
Renata remained silent.
"You lied."
Still nothing.
Detective Monroe immediately addressed Martha.
"Did you ever read it?"
The elderly woman shook her head.
"No."
"But I remember something."
"What?"
"There was writing on the outside."
She closed her eyes, trying to remember.
Then quietly said,
'If you are reading this, I may already be gone.'
The room erupted in whispers.
Grant felt his chest tighten.
Sophia had expected something to happen.
She hadn't simply feared Renata.
She had been preparing for the possibility that she would disappear.
Meanwhile...
Chief Harris and two forensic officers searched the old nursery.
Most of Lily's toys remained untouched.
Dust covered the shelves.
The loose wall panel was still there.
Harris carefully removed it.
Inside...
Nothing.
Empty.
The envelope was gone.
But something else caught his attention.
A tiny flash drive had slipped into a narrow crack behind the wooden beam.
"So that's what you were hiding," Harris whispered.
He carefully placed it into an evidence bag.
Across the mansion...
Emma helped Lily draw with colored pencils while investigators continued searching every room.
Lily suddenly stopped coloring.
She stared at a blank page.
Then slowly began sketching.
Emma watched quietly.
Within minutes, a detailed drawing appeared.
Not flowers.
Not animals.
A room.
Emma frowned.
"Lily..."
"What's this?"
The little girl pointed to the picture.
"A secret room."
Emma looked closer.
The child had drawn a fireplace.
A staircase.
A metal door.
Her heart skipped.
"Where is this?"
Lily answered without hesitation.
"Behind Daddy's library."
Emma's eyes widened.
There was no staircase behind the library.
At least...
None that anyone knew about.
Chief Harris arrived moments later carrying the recovered flash drive.
Emma immediately showed him Lily's drawing.
His expression changed.
He looked from the picture...
...to Lily.
"Who showed you this?"
Lily blinked.
"Nobody."
"Then how do you know?"
"I followed Renata."
The room fell silent.
"When?"
"The night Mommy disappeared."
Emma knelt beside her.
"What happened?"
Lily pointed to the drawing again.
"Renata opened the fireplace."
"There were stairs."
"She took someone downstairs."
Harris felt chills run down his spine.
Someone.
Not something.
A person.
"Who?"
Lily squeezed her eyes shut.
"I couldn't see."
"It was dark."
"But..."
She opened them again.
"I heard Mommy crying."
Minutes later...
Grant, Detective Monroe, Harris, and the forensic team gathered inside the mansion's grand library.
Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves surrounded an enormous stone fireplace.
It had stood there for more than a century.
Grant had passed it thousands of times.
He had never suspected it concealed anything.
Harris compared the fireplace to Lily's drawing.
Every detail matched.
The carved lion.
The brass poker stand.
Even a crack in the marble.
"There has to be a mechanism."
For nearly twenty minutes, investigators searched every inch of the fireplace.
Nothing.
Then Emma quietly stepped forward.
She remembered something Renata had done countless times.
Adjusting one particular bronze candleholder before every formal dinner.
Almost absentmindedly.
Emma reached toward it.
Twisted it once.
A deep metallic click echoed through the library.
Everyone froze.
The massive fireplace slowly rumbled.
Dust drifted from the ceiling as the entire stone structure began sliding sideways.
Behind it...
A narrow staircase descended into complete darkness.
Cold air rushed upward from below.
Detective Monroe switched on her flashlight.
The beam disappeared into the darkness.
Then...
From somewhere deep beneath the mansion...
Everyone heard it.
A faint metallic sound.
Clang.
Then again.
Clang.
Like someone...
Still alive...
Was striking metal against metal.
May you like
Waiting to be found.
