Chapter 9: The Prison Beneath the Mansion

Chapter 9: The Prison Beneath the Mansion
The metallic clang echoed through the hidden staircase.
Once.
Twice.
Then silence.
Every person standing in the library instinctively held their breath.
Detective Carla Monroe raised a hand.
"Nobody moves until we know what's down there."
Chief Harris drew his flashlight while two tactical officers unholstered their weapons.
Grant stepped forward.
"I'm coming."
Monroe immediately blocked his path.
"No."
"If someone is alive down there—"
"They've been trapped beneath your house."
Grant's jaw tightened.
"I'm not staying behind."
After a brief hesitation, Monroe nodded.
"You stay in the middle."
"You follow every instruction."
Grant agreed without another word.
The narrow staircase spiraled downward beneath the mansion.
Each stone step was damp.
The air grew colder with every level they descended.
The walls were lined with old brick, stained by decades of moisture.
Emma remained at the top with Lily.
She wrapped both arms around the little girl.
Lily refused to look toward the opening.
Her entire body had become rigid.
"I don't like that place," she whispered.
Emma stroked her hair.
"You don't have to go down there."
Lily slowly shook her head.
"I've been there before."
Emma froze.
"What?"
Lily looked frightened.
"Renata took me."
"When?"
"I don't know..."
"I was little."
"You weren't much younger than you are now."
Lily squeezed her eyes shut.
"She said if I ever told Daddy..."
"...I'd stay down there forever."
Emma felt a chill spread through her entire body.
The child hadn't only witnessed abuse.
She had been terrorized into silence.
Fifty feet below the library...
The investigators reached a heavy iron door.
Rust covered the hinges.
Fresh scratch marks covered the outside.
Monroe examined the lock.
"It opens from this side."
She slowly turned the handle.
The door groaned open.
The smell that escaped was overwhelming.
Mold.
Dust.
Stale air.
Chief Harris swept his flashlight across the room.
An old underground chamber stretched into darkness.
Shelves lined one wall.
Broken furniture filled another.
It looked less like a basement...
...and more like someone had deliberately created a hidden living space.
Grant stared in disbelief.
"I've lived here for twelve years."
"I never knew this existed."
One flashlight beam landed on a narrow bed.
Blankets.
A pillow.
Still neatly arranged.
Someone had been sleeping there.
Recently.
Another beam revealed empty food cans.
Bottled water.
Fresh batteries.
Someone had been supplying the room.
For a long time.
Monroe quietly whispered,
"This wasn't built as a prison."
She walked farther inside.
"It became one."
Then—
Clang.
The sound came again.
Closer.
Everyone spun toward the far end of the chamber.
Another iron door stood partially hidden behind old shelves.
This one was different.
It had bars.
Like a jail cell.
The metallic sound came from inside.
Grant's pulse exploded.
"Someone's in there!"
The tactical officers rushed forward.
Chief Harris pulled away the shelves blocking the entrance.
Behind them stood a reinforced steel door with a small viewing window.
Someone inside struck the bars again.
Weakly.
Monroe shined her flashlight through the opening.
A figure slowly stepped into the light.
Long hair.
Thin frame.
Bare feet.
The person instinctively shielded their eyes from the flashlight.
Grant whispered,
"...Sophia?"
The woman looked up.
For one impossible moment...
She looked exactly like his late wife.
Then Grant noticed the differences.
Older.
Thinner.
A scar across her forehead.
Eyes filled with fear instead of recognition.
She stared at the strangers outside the cell.
Her lips trembled.
Finally...
She spoke.
"Is..."
"...is Renata dead?"
Nobody answered.
The woman slowly stepped backward.
"No..."
"No..."
"She'll punish me."
Grant stared through the bars.
"Who are you?"
The woman hesitated.
Then quietly replied,
"My name..."
"...is Elena Carter."
Chief Harris felt his stomach drop.
"Carter?"
She nodded.
"I'm Michael Carter's wife."
Silence swallowed the underground chamber.
Grant's mind raced.
Michael Carter had disappeared.
Now his wife had been found imprisoned beneath the mansion.
For two years.
Impossible.
Monroe immediately ordered,
"Break the lock!"
One officer swung a heavy pry bar against the rusted mechanism.
Once.
Twice.
On the third strike—
The lock shattered.
The steel door slowly creaked open.
Elena didn't run.
She didn't scream.
She simply collapsed from exhaustion before anyone could reach her.
Grant caught her before she hit the floor.
She was frighteningly light.
Barely more than skin and bone.
A medic who had followed the team underground quickly knelt beside her.
"We need to get her upstairs now."
As paramedics prepared Elena for transport, she suddenly grabbed Grant's wrist with surprising strength.
Her eyes filled with panic.
"You have to find..."
She struggled to breathe.
"...the red file."
Grant leaned closer.
"What red file?"
She swallowed painfully.
"Michael..."
"...hid everything."
"Where?"
Elena looked directly into his eyes.
Then whispered four words that sent a shock through everyone underground.
"Your wife is alive."
Before Grant could ask another question...
Elena lost consciousness.
The chamber fell silent once again.
Somewhere above them...
Unaware that the investigation had just taken another impossible turn...
Renata sat in handcuffs.
And for the first time since her arrest...
May you like
She began to smile.
