Chapter 4: The Confession Nobody Expected

Chapter 4: The Confession Nobody Expected
The flames crackled inside the marble fireplace.
For several long seconds, no one spoke.
Grant stood only a few feet away from Renata, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles had turned white. The heat from the fire filled the hidden study, but it did nothing to ease the icy feeling spreading through his chest.
He searched her face for the woman he had married.
The woman who had comforted him after Sophia's death.
The woman who had promised to help raise Lily as her own daughter.
He couldn't find her.
Instead, he saw someone else entirely.
Someone whose smile never reached her eyes.
Someone who wasn't frightened anymore.
Renata calmly folded her arms.
"So," she said softly, "you finally decided to question me."
Grant's voice was barely audible.
"Answer me."
"Did you kill Sophia?"
Renata tilted her head.
"Before I answer that... tell me something."
Grant didn't respond.
"When was the last time you actually trusted your own instincts instead of listening to everyone else?"
The question caught him off guard.
"You've spent two years believing whatever people told you," Renata continued. "Doctors. Lawyers. Detectives. Me."
She took one slow step forward.
"You never even wondered why Sophia was standing on those stairs that night."
Chief Harris immediately raised a hand.
"Stay where you are."
Renata laughed quietly.
"Oh, Harris. If I wanted to run, I would've done it already."
Her confidence unsettled everyone in the room.
Officer Daniels subtly rested his hand on his holster.
Something about Renata's calmness felt wrong.
People cornered by the truth usually panicked.
She didn't.
She almost looked... relieved.
Downstairs, Emma sat beside Lily in the family library.
Dr. Morrison had finished treating the burn on Lily's scalp and instructed that she rest.
The child leaned against Emma's shoulder, exhausted from the emotional storm of the afternoon.
Emma gently brushed Lily's hair away from the bandage.
"You were very brave."
Lily looked down.
"I was scared."
"I know."
"I thought Daddy wouldn't believe me."
Emma swallowed hard.
"So did I."
Lily's tiny fingers tightened around Emma's hand.
"Will Renata come back?"
Emma answered honestly.
"I don't know."
"But she can't hurt you while I'm here."
For the first time that day, Lily managed a faint smile.
It lasted only a second.
Back upstairs...
Grant refused to look away from Renata.
"I'm asking one last time."
"Did you murder Sophia?"
Renata slowly walked toward the large window overlooking the estate.
Outside, rain clouds gathered across the horizon.
She spoke without turning around.
"You know what your biggest weakness is?"
Grant remained silent.
"You always wanted to believe the best in people."
She smiled bitterly.
"That's why Sophia loved you."
Grant felt something tighten in his chest.
"And that's exactly why she died."
The room froze.
Officer Daniels immediately stepped forward.
"Mrs. Ashford—"
Renata interrupted him.
"I didn't push her."
Grant blinked.
Hope flickered inside him.
Then Renata quietly added,
"I only gave her a choice."
Silence crashed over the room.
Grant stared at her.
"What does that mean?"
Renata finally turned around.
Her expression had changed.
The arrogance was gone.
In its place stood years of buried resentment.
"You think your marriage was perfect."
"It wasn't."
Grant shook his head.
"I loved Sophia."
"I know."
"She loved me."
"I know."
"So why?"
Renata laughed.
A tired, broken laugh.
"Because she had everything."
The words echoed through the study.
"Your love."
"Your trust."
"This house."
"Lily."
"The future."
Renata's voice gradually became sharper.
"And I had nothing."
Chief Harris quietly observed her.
People often revealed more than they intended once they began talking.
He gave no sign to interrupt.
Renata continued.
"I worked for this family for eight years."
"I watched both of you build a perfect life."
"I solved every problem."
"I protected your reputation."
"I sacrificed everything."
She looked directly at Grant.
"And every night..."
"...you still chose her."
Grant whispered,
"That's not a reason to destroy a family."
"No."
"It isn't."
Another long silence.
Then Renata said something no one expected.
"I never meant for her to die."
Grant's heartbeat thundered.
"What happened?"
Renata closed her eyes.
"She found out."
"Found out what?"
"That I had been changing her medication."
Grant's entire body went rigid.
Drugs.
The migraines.
The dizziness.
The fainting spells.
Suddenly dozens of strange incidents from two years ago came rushing back.
Sophia constantly complained that her prescriptions made her feel worse.
Doctors blamed stress.
Grant blamed overwork.
No one questioned the medication itself.
Renata slowly nodded.
"She confronted me."
"On the staircase."
"She said she was going to the police."
Grant's breathing became uneven.
"And then?"
Renata looked toward the burning fireplace.
"I grabbed her arm."
"I only wanted her to listen."
"She pulled away."
"She lost her balance."
Grant whispered,
"No..."
"I reached for her."
Renata's voice finally cracked.
"But I wasn't fast enough."
Whether it was the complete truth—or only part of it—no one in the room could tell.
But everyone knew one thing.
Sophia's death was no longer an accident.
And before anyone could ask another question—
Chief Harris's radio suddenly exploded with static.
"Chief!"
A frantic guard shouted through the speaker.
"You need to get outside now!"
"We found another body."
The entire room fell silent.
Grant slowly turned toward Harris.
"What did he say?"
Harris's face became grim.
"It looks like this story..."
May you like
"...is much bigger than Sophia's death."
