Chapter 13 - The Office With No Windows

Ross Meridian occupied the forty-third floor of a glass tower twelve blocks from the hotel.
At 12:32 a.m., the lobby was empty except for a night guard who looked startled when a bride in an ivory coat walked through the revolving doors.
Daniel gave his name.
The guard looked at Sophie.
Then Evelyn.
Then the wedding gown visible beneath Sophie's coat.
"Mr. Ross is upstairs," he said slowly.
"He told us not to send anyone up."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"I'm his son."
"I know who you are, sir."
"Then call him."
The guard did.
Thirty seconds later, the elevator unlocked.
No one spoke on the ride up.
Sophie stared at the glowing floor numbers.
Evelyn stared at her own reflection in the mirrored wall.
She still wore the black evening gown she had chosen to look elegant beside her husband in family photographs.
The photographs had been taken.
They would now preserve a marriage that had already ended, a father who had already betrayed his daughter, and a family table that had become a crime scene in everything but name.
The elevator opened into a dark reception area.
Only one office showed light.
Graham Ross stood behind a long walnut desk when they entered.
He had removed his tuxedo jacket.
His white shirt sleeves were rolled to his elbows.
Three open file boxes sat on the floor.
A document shredder stood beside his chair.
Daniel stopped.
"Why is the shredder out?"
Graham looked at it.
"Old tax files."
"At midnight?"
"I couldn't sleep."
Sophie laughed once.
"Neither could we."
Graham looked at her wedding coat.
Shame flickered across his face.
"Sophie, I'm sorry."
"Everyone is sorry."
She removed the coat.
The detailed white gown filled the dark office with a strange brightness.
"Show us the 2018 amendment."
Graham looked at Evelyn.
"You should have an attorney present."
"So should you."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
Evelyn placed Melissa's photograph of the property transfer on his desk.
"Did you see this before tonight?"
Graham looked down.
His face gave away nothing.
"Where did you get it?"
"Answer the question."
"Yes."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Dad."
Graham held up a hand.
"I believed it was legitimate."
Evelyn leaned over the desk.
"I never signed it."
"Then we have a serious problem."
"We already have several."
Graham looked toward the locked credenza behind him.
Daniel noticed.
"Is the amendment in there?"
His father said nothing.
Daniel walked around the desk.
Graham stepped in front of him.
"Don't."
"Then open it."
"Daniel."
"Open it."
For a moment, father and son stood inches apart.
Sophie watched them with an expression Evelyn could not read.
Then Graham took a key from his pocket.
He unlocked the credenza.
Inside sat a red legal folder.
He placed it on the desk.
2018 MARLOWE SUCCESSION AMENDMENT.
Evelyn opened it.
Caroline's signature appeared on the final page.
Graham's witness signature appeared beneath it.
There was no Evelyn signature.
Instead, a document titled Temporary Delegation of Trustee Authority had been inserted before the amendment.
Evelyn's name was signed at the bottom.
She stared at it.
The signature looked convincing.
Daniel looked over her shoulder.
"Is that yours?"
"No."
Graham's face tightened.
"I believed it was."
"Who gave it to you?"
"Charles."
"Did you watch me sign it?"
"No."
"Did you call me to confirm it?"
Graham looked away.
"No."
Sophie whispered, "Because Dad told you it was fine."
Graham looked at her.
"Because I had known your father for twenty-five years."
"You knew Grandma longer."
That landed.
Graham sat down.
For the first time, he looked old.
"Yes."
Evelyn flipped through the amendment.
It removed the non-family relationship restriction.
It weakened the Founder Beneficiary consent requirement.
It expanded the trustee's emergency sale powers.
Everything Charles needed tonight had been prepared eight years earlier.
"This wasn't a recent plan," Evelyn said.
Graham did not answer.
"Charles started building this in 2018."
"I don't know when he decided to use it this way."
Daniel picked up another file from the desk.
Graham grabbed it first.
Too late.
Daniel had seen the label.
VOSS MERIDIAN - FOUNDING CAPITAL.
"Melissa said you invested ten million."
Graham sat very still.
"I made a loan."
"To a company buying Hartwell Grand?"
"A secured bridge loan."
"In exchange for the original hotel building."
Graham looked at Evelyn.
"Not the building."
"What then?"
"A development right on the adjoining parcel."
Evelyn stared.
The adjoining parcel was the hotel's courtyard and conference wing.
Her parents had purchased it in 1991.
"Charles could not promise you that either."
"He showed me the transfer authorization."
Evelyn tapped the photograph.
"The forged one."
Graham looked sick now.
"I didn't know."
Daniel's anger finally broke.
"You didn't know because you didn't ask."
Graham looked at his son.
"Be careful."
"No."
Daniel's voice rose.
"You told me my whole life that reputation was what people gave you after watching your choices."
"Then you helped Charles steal from Sophie's family because the deal looked good."
Graham stood.
"I was trying to stabilize a company that employed thousands of people."
"You were trying to get a development parcel."
Silence.
Sophie looked at Daniel.
He looked devastated.
Evelyn realized something painful.
Charles had not only contaminated Sophie's wedding.
He had dragged Daniel's father into the betrayal deeply enough to stain their marriage before the first night was over.
Graham sat again.
"The sale is suspended."
"That's not enough," Evelyn said.
"What do you want?"
"Every document."
"You can't have privileged files."
"Then preserve them."
Graham glanced at the shredder.
Evelyn followed his eyes.
"And unplug that."
Daniel did it.
Graham did not stop him.
Then Sophie's phone buzzed.
Dozens of notifications flooded the screen at once.
She frowned.
"What happened?"
Mara had sent a link.
A video from the wedding was spreading online.
The clip showed Evelyn standing at the family table, arguing with Charles.
It did not show Melissa's place card.
It did not show the forged signature.
It did not show Charles ordering security to remove her.
It began with Evelyn saying, "You brought her to our daughter's wedding."
Then it cut to Charles calmly telling her, "Don't make a scene."
The caption read:
BILLIONAIRE HOTEL WIFE MELTS DOWN AT DAUGHTER'S WEDDING OVER SEATING DISPUTE.
Sophie looked up.
"Who posted this?"
Evelyn already knew.
Charles had lost control of the room.
May you like
So he was trying to control the story.
