Chapter 8 - What Her Mother Knew

Evelyn read the letter twice before she trusted herself to speak.

The paper was thin and slightly yellowed at the edges.

Her mother's handwriting remained sharp and elegant.

Dear Evelyn.

If you are reading this, someone is attempting to separate ownership from responsibility.

Evelyn swallowed.

Sophie moved closer.

"Read it out loud."

Charles stepped forward.

"This is private."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You don't get to decide that anymore."

She continued.

"Your father and I built the company to support the family, the employees, and the communities that trusted our name."

"We did not build it so a spouse, banker, lover, or temporary executive could trade it away while the family was distracted."

Melissa flinched at the word lover.

Charles laughed bitterly.

"Convenient."

Evelyn ignored him.

"For that reason, I have placed a dormant protective right inside the succession documents."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What right?"

Evelyn read the next sentence.

"If more than thirty-five percent of family control is transferred without the Founder Beneficiary's direct witnessed consent, all voting rights attached to management shares revert temporarily to the Marlowe Stewardship Trust pending review."

Daniel's mouth opened slightly.

Nathan Cole spoke through the phone.

"That could freeze the closing."

Charles shook his head.

"No."

"Do you have the codicil?" Nathan asked.

Evelyn held it up.

"Yes."

"Notarized?"

"Yes."

"Recorded?"

She checked the bottom.

A filing stamp appeared beside the signature.

"Delaware Chancery registry reference."

Nathan's voice changed.

"Then photograph every page now."

Daniel did.

Charles moved toward him.

Peter stepped between them.

It was a small act.

But everyone noticed.

The hotel manager had chosen a side.

Charles stared at him.

"You work for me."

Peter's face was pale.

"I work for the hotel."

"I am the hotel."

Evelyn looked at the vault walls.

"No, Charles."

Her voice was calm.

"That has always been your problem."

11:36.

Twenty-four minutes until the control transfer.

Nathan instructed Daniel to email the codicil to the transaction lawyer, the buyer's counsel, and the company's registered agent.

Charles took out his phone.

"Do not send that."

Daniel hit send.

Charles's phone rang immediately.

He answered.

"Pike."

His expression hardened while he listened.

"No."

Pause.

"Because it was superseded."

Pause.

"Find the amendment."

Melissa stared at him.

"You keep saying there's an amendment."

Charles covered the phone.

"There is."

"Where is it?"

"With counsel."

"Then why are they looking for it?"

Charles's eyes flashed.

Melissa stepped back.

Evelyn saw fear again.

Not fear of Evelyn.

Fear of Charles.

The call ended.

Charles shoved the phone into his pocket.

"This proves nothing."

Nathan's voice came through Daniel's phone.

"Actually, it proves enough to force a pause."

Charles glared at the speaker.

"Who are you?"

"Nathan Cole."

"Cole from Kendrick Cole?"

"Formerly."

Charles gave a humorless laugh.

"You represent Senator Capital now, don't you?"

Evelyn looked at Daniel's phone.

Nathan paused.

"I advise them on certain matters."

Charles turned toward Evelyn.

Triumph flickered in his face.

"There it is."

Sophie frowned.

"What?"

Charles pointed at Evelyn.

"Your mother met with Senator Capital."

"She already said why."

"And now her new attorney advises them."

Nathan cut in.

"I'm Daniel's friend, not Mrs. Hartwell's attorney."

"Yet."

Charles looked at Sophie.

"This is a takeover attempt."

Evelyn stared at him.

"You forged our daughter's signature."

"You don't know who signed it."

"Your device. Your closing. Your mistress's phone."

"And your capital partner waiting in the wings."

Sophie pressed her fingers to her temples.

"Stop."

Neither parent spoke.

She looked exhausted now.

Not like a bride.

Like a daughter forced to discover that both of her parents had entire secret lives hidden beneath the wedding cake.

"I need facts," she said.

Evelyn nodded.

"Then you should have them."

She handed Sophie the private investigator summary from her clutch.

She had carried it all evening without planning to use it.

Charles saw the folder.

"You brought that to the wedding?"

"I brought it because I was going to confront you after Sophie left."

Sophie opened the first page.

Photographs.

Charles entering Melissa's apartment.

Charles and Melissa holding hands outside a restaurant in Boston.

Charles kissing Melissa in a parking garage.

Sophie closed the folder.

Her face tightened.

"Enough."

Melissa looked away.

Charles did not apologize.

That was perhaps the cruelest part.

He simply said, "My marriage has been over for years."

Evelyn felt the sentence pass through her without breaking anything.

The breaking had happened earlier.

"Then you should have had the courage to end it before replacing me at our daughter's table."

Charles's eyes narrowed.

"You think this is about a chair."

"No."

Evelyn held up her mother's letter.

"I think the chair is the first honest thing you've done."

Melissa looked confused.

Evelyn continued.

"You finally showed everyone exactly where you thought I belonged."

"And now I know exactly where you think you belong."

Charles laughed.

"In control?"

"Yes."

He moved closer.

"You don't have the votes."

Evelyn looked down at the codicil.

"At midnight, maybe neither do you."

11:48.

Twelve minutes.

Then Sophie's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

"Hello?"

A man's voice spoke quickly.

"Mrs. Ross, my name is Aaron Pike."

Everyone turned toward her.

The transaction lawyer.

Sophie put the call on speaker.

Pike continued.

"I need to ask you one question on the record."

"Okay."

"Did you personally execute the voting consent at 10:44 tonight?"

Sophie looked directly at her father.

"No."

Silence.

Then Pike said something that drained the color from Charles's face.

"Understood."

"Then we have a bigger problem."

"The buyer received a certification from Mr. Hartwell stating that he personally witnessed you sign it."

Evelyn looked at Charles.

Sophie whispered, "Dad?"

Charles said nothing.

May you like

And for the first time, Melissa moved away from him as if he were someone dangerous.
