Chapter 9 - The Man Who Witnessed a Lie

Sophie stared at her father as though the room had emptied around him.

"You told them you watched me sign it?"

Charles's face had gone flat.

Not guilty.

Not ashamed.

Calculating.

"The certification language was standard."

Daniel let out a short, stunned laugh.

"Standard language doesn't make a false statement true."

Aaron Pike remained on speakerphone.

"Mr. Hartwell, I strongly recommend that you stop discussing the substance of the certification until you have independent counsel."

Charles looked furious.

"You are my counsel."

"We represent Hartwell Grand Holdings in the transaction."

"I am Hartwell Grand Holdings."

Pike paused.

"That is not legally accurate."

Evelyn watched the sentence hit him.

All night, different people had told Charles the same thing in different ways.

Peter had told him he was not the hotel.

Daniel had told him he did not own Sophie's signature.

Now his own lawyer was telling him he did not own the company.

Charles had built his life around making those distinctions disappear.

Tonight they were returning one by one.

Pike continued.

"The buyer has suspended funding pending review."

Melissa exhaled sharply.

Charles's eyes moved to her.

"For how long?"

"Until we can verify the trust restrictions and the execution of the descendant consent."

"The trust restriction was amended."

"Then send us the executed amendment."

"You have it."

Another pause.

"We do not."

The silence that followed was so complete Evelyn could hear the old ventilation fan inside the vault.

Charles looked genuinely confused for half a second.

Then angry.

"Check the 2018 refinancing file."

"We already are."

"It is there."

"Then we will find it."

Pike's tone became careful.

"In the meantime, no one should alter, destroy, or remove any records related to the transaction."

Charles ended the call.

Daniel stared at him.

"That was a preservation warning."

"I know what it was."

Melissa rubbed her arms.

"Charles, I want to see the amendment."

"Not now."

"You said my proxy was protected because Evelyn had already signed away the relationship restriction."

Sophie looked between them.

"You planned to give Melissa voting control over Dad's shares?"

Melissa answered before Charles could stop her.

"Temporarily."

Evelyn almost smiled at the word.

"Twenty years is temporary?"

Melissa's eyes snapped toward her.

"I didn't write the agreement."

"You carried it in your purse."

"Because Charles asked me to."

"You sat in my chair because Charles asked you to?"

Melissa's mouth tightened.

"No."

The answer came quickly.

Evelyn noticed.

"Then why?"

Melissa looked toward the vault door.

"Because he told me the family knew."

Sophie stared at her.

"Knew what?"

"About us."

Charles said her name sharply.

"Melissa."

She ignored him.

"He said the marriage was finished."

"It wasn't," Evelyn said.

"I know that now."

"Did you?"

Melissa met her eyes.

For the first time, there was no smugness there.

Only defensiveness.

"He told me you lived separate lives."

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"We ate breakfast together yesterday."

Melissa looked at Charles.

His expression did not change.

"You said she was staying at the Connecticut house."

"She was supposed to."

Evelyn laughed softly.

"I was supposed to?"

Charles glared at Melissa.

"Stop talking."

Melissa's jaw tightened.

"You don't get to tell me that anymore."

Sophie looked away as if the argument itself made her sick.

Daniel placed a hand against her back.

"We need to get out of here."

Evelyn checked the clock.

11:54.

Six minutes until the original control-transfer time.

Nathan Cole spoke through Daniel's phone.

"Do not leave the trust originals unattended."

Charles looked at him.

"They cannot leave the vault."

Evelyn held up her mother's letter.

"Copies can."

Peter brought in the archival scanner from the accounting office.

They began scanning.

At 11:57, Evelyn's phone rang.

Her sister, Caroline.

Evelyn nearly ignored it.

Then she remembered Caroline had served as co-trustee before moving to Arizona.

She answered.

"Evie, what is going on?"

"Why?"

"I just got an alert from the Marlowe Stewardship Trust."

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

"What alert?"

"A control protection event."

Charles stopped breathing.

Caroline continued.

"It says an unauthorized transfer was attempted and management voting rights have been suspended pending trustee review."

Evelyn looked at the clock.

11:58.

The protective clause had triggered early.

"Caroline, who has temporary voting authority?"

Paper rustled on the other end.

"It says the independent stewardship trustee."

"Who is that?"

Caroline went silent.

"You don't know?"

"No."

"Mom changed it before she died."

Evelyn felt a chill.

"Changed it to whom?"

Caroline read the name.

"Graham Ross."

Daniel went completely still.

Sophie slowly turned toward her husband.

The groom's father.

The same man who had signed Charles's sale agreement.

The same man who had been upstairs when the forged signature was created.

At midnight, Charles would not control the company.

Neither would Evelyn.

May you like

Graham Ross would.
