Chapter 6 - Midnight Control

Evelyn had always believed that panic was a luxury.

People panicked when they thought emotion could change the facts.

Facts did not care.

Facts sat quietly until someone found them.

So while Charles insisted the reception continue, Evelyn began collecting facts.

Daniel called an attorney he trusted from his years in corporate law.

Sophie called Mara Ellis and asked her to come upstairs alone.

Melissa stood near the window with her arms folded tightly across her chest.

Charles paced.

"This is absurd."

No one answered him.

At 11:02, Mara entered the bridal suite.

She took one look at the faces and closed the door behind her.

"What happened?"

Sophie held up the tablet.

"Who had this between ten thirty and ten forty-five?"

Mara frowned.

"It should have been here."

"Was it locked?"

"No."

"Who knew the passcode?"

"My assistant and I."

"Anyone else?"

Mara hesitated.

Then she looked at Charles.

"Mr. Hartwell asked me for it around ten twenty."

The room went silent.

Charles stopped pacing.

"For the seating chart."

Mara looked confused.

"You said you needed to check the final vendor payments."

"I checked both."

"When did you return it?" Daniel asked.

"I didn't."

Sophie stared at her.

"What?"

"Mr. Hartwell said he would leave it in the bridal suite."

Mara looked toward the makeup table.

"I haven't seen it since."

Evelyn turned to Charles.

"You had the tablet."

"For ten minutes."

"During the exact window when the forged signature was created."

Charles's face hardened.

"Be careful what you accuse me of."

Daniel gave a humorless smile.

"That's good advice for everyone."

Mara's eyes moved to Melissa.

"You were up here too."

Melissa nodded slowly.

"For a few minutes."

"With Charles?"

Melissa did not answer.

Evelyn watched her.

"Were you with him?"

Melissa looked at Charles.

"Yes."

Sophie shut her eyes.

Evelyn felt another layer of humiliation settle over the room.

They had not merely brought the affair to the wedding.

They had disappeared into the bridal suite together.

On her daughter's wedding night.

Melissa spoke quickly.

"It wasn't what you think."

Sophie laughed bitterly.

"You have used that sentence too many times tonight."

"We were dealing with the closing."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Did Charles use the tablet?"

Melissa hesitated.

Charles interrupted.

"This conversation is finished."

"Did he?" Daniel repeated.

Melissa looked at the floor.

"Yes."

Charles swore under his breath.

Evelyn checked the clock.

11:08.

Fifty-two minutes until control transferred.

"Who is the buyer?" she asked.

Charles stared at her.

"You saw the agreement."

"Voss Meridian Holdings is a shell."

His expression changed slightly.

Evelyn knew she was right.

She had learned to recognize shell-company names after spending months tracing Charles's expenses.

"Who is behind it?"

"A consortium."

"Which consortium?"

"Confidential."

"You are selling nearly half of my parents' company and refusing to tell me who is buying it."

"It is our company."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"My father put the first mortgage on his own house to open that hotel."

"And I turned it into a national chain."

"With my mother's capital."

"With my leadership."

"Then why is it drowning in debt?"

Charles went quiet.

That question finally reached him.

Mara shifted uncomfortably.

"Should I leave?"

Sophie shook her head.

"No."

She pointed at the tablet.

"I need you to tell us everything you remember."

Mara nodded.

"At about ten twenty, Mr. Hartwell asked for the tablet."

"Where?"

"Near the west hallway."

"Was he alone?"

Mara thought for a moment.

"No."

Her eyes moved toward the door.

"Mr. Ross was with him."

Daniel frowned.

"My father?"

"Yes."

Sophie looked at Daniel.

He went still.

"Dad told me he was speaking to investors outside."

Mara continued.

"They both came upstairs."

"And Melissa?" Evelyn asked.

"She joined them a few minutes later."

Three people.

Charles.

Graham.

Melissa.

All in the bridal suite with an unlocked tablet and a document requiring Sophie's signature.

Evelyn felt the pattern coming together.

Not the full picture.

But enough to know this had been planned.

Daniel called his father again.

This time Graham did not answer.

He called twice more.

Voicemail.

Sophie looked toward the door.

"Where is he?"

Mara checked the reception schedule on her phone.

"He left the ballroom around ten fifty."

Daniel's expression sharpened.

"Did anyone see him leave the hotel?"

Mara shook her head.

Daniel texted his brother.

No answer.

Then Evelyn's phone buzzed.

A notification from her bank appeared.

ACCOUNT ACCESS TEMPORARILY RESTRICTED.

She frowned.

Then another.

Her primary credit card had been suspended.

Then another.

Joint brokerage access changed.

Evelyn looked at Charles.

He did not even pretend surprise.

"What did you do?"

"Risk controls," he said.

"You froze my accounts?"

"Joint accounts."

"On our daughter's wedding night?"

"You have been moving money without authorization."

"My money."

"Marital money."

Sophie looked at him in disbelief.

"You planned this too."

Charles said nothing.

Evelyn understood now.

The sale.

The forged signature.

The frozen accounts.

The public replacement at the family table.

They were not separate acts of cruelty.

They were one operation.

At 11:17, Daniel's attorney called back.

His name was Nathan Cole.

Daniel put him on speaker.

Nathan listened without interruption.

Then he asked one question.

"Mrs. Hartwell, do you still have your original family trust documents?"

Evelyn thought of the locked cabinet in the penthouse study.

"Yes."

"Get them before midnight if you can."

Charles laughed.

"Why?"

Nathan ignored him.

"If the seller is relying on a descendant-triggered vesting provision, there may be matching restrictions on transfers."

Evelyn's pulse quickened.

"My mother loved matching restrictions."

Nathan almost sounded amused.

"Then I would like to meet her drafting attorney."

"He died nine years ago."

"Find the documents."

Evelyn grabbed her clutch.

Charles stepped in front of the door.

"You're not leaving."

She looked at him.

"Move."

"The penthouse is under security hold."

"You locked me out of my home?"

"Until we resolve the financial irregularities."

Sophie stared at him.

"You changed the locks already?"

Charles smiled without warmth.

"Digital access. It took thirty seconds."

Evelyn felt something inside her become very quiet.

Charles had expected her to discover the affair tonight.

He had expected the confrontation.

He had prepared to isolate her financially and physically before she could react.

He had simply not expected Sophie to refuse the signature.

Or perhaps he had.

Perhaps that was why someone forged it.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"Is there another copy of the trust?"

She thought.

Then she remembered her mother's old habit.

Every major family document existed in duplicate.

One copy at home.

One copy in the original hotel vault.

The vault was beneath the very building they were standing in.

Evelyn looked at Charles.

He saw the realization in her face.

His composure vanished.

"Don't."

She smiled for the first time all night.

May you like

"Now I know where to go."
