Chapter 15 - The Envelope Behind the Painting

They left Charles standing in Graham's office.

He shouted after them.

No one stopped.

Daniel asked the building guard to prevent any files from leaving the Ross Meridian floor until Graham gave instructions.

Graham hesitated for exactly three seconds.

Then he authorized it.

That was his first real break from Charles.

Charles watched him make the call.

The look between the two men ended a friendship that had lasted longer than Daniel and Sophie had been alive.

The ride back to the hotel took eleven minutes.

Sophie sat between Daniel and Evelyn in the rear seat.

Her wedding dress filled the car.

No one mentioned the missed cake cutting.

No one mentioned the first dance that had ended hours earlier.

No one mentioned that Sophie and Daniel were supposed to be on their way to the airport for a honeymoon flight to Paris.

At 1:43 a.m., they entered the hotel through the kitchen loading corridor.

Peter met them there.

"Two executives from corporate came down with archive boxes."

Evelyn's jaw tightened.

"Did you stop them?"

"Yes."

"Where are the boxes?"

"Security office."

"And Charles's office?"

"Locked."

Melissa appeared at the end of the corridor.

She had changed out of the dusty pink dress.

Now she wore a black hotel robe over what looked like a slip, as if she had thrown on the first thing she could find after someone told her to leave the suite Charles kept upstairs.

Her makeup was partly gone.

Her confidence was gone too.

She held a large brown envelope.

Sophie stopped walking.

Melissa stopped as well.

For a second, neither woman spoke.

Then Melissa held the envelope toward Evelyn.

"I found this behind a painting in Charles's private office."

Evelyn did not take it.

"Why were you in his office?"

"Because he told me to get my things out of the executive suite and leave the hotel."

"So you searched his office?"

"Yes."

No apology.

No attempt to make the choice sound noble.

Evelyn almost respected that.

"How did you know where to look?"

Melissa looked embarrassed.

"He used the same hiding place for gifts."

Sophie made a disgusted sound.

Melissa winced.

"I know."

Evelyn took the envelope.

Inside was a notarized document dated two years earlier.

It was titled Marital Separation and Property Framework.

Evelyn stared at the first page.

Her name appeared throughout.

So did Charles's.

The agreement stated that Evelyn and Charles had been living separate and apart since January of that year.

They had not.

It stated that Evelyn waived any claim to Charles's future business interests.

She had not.

It stated that each spouse acknowledged independent counsel.

She had never seen the document.

At the bottom was her signature.

Another forgery.

But that was not what made her hands shake.

A notary stamp appeared beneath it.

The notary was a woman named Lorraine Becker.

Evelyn knew the name.

Lorraine had been Charles's executive assistant for nineteen years.

She had retired six months ago.

"Where is Lorraine now?" Evelyn asked.

Peter looked at her.

"Florida, I think."

Melissa shook her head.

"No."

Everyone turned.

"She moved back last month."

"How do you know?"

"Charles met her twice."

Evelyn's pulse quickened.

"Where?"

Melissa hesitated.

"At the Riverside Club."

Daniel took a photograph of the notary page.

"We need her."

Evelyn continued reading.

The property framework included an attachment.

Schedule C.

Separate Property Acknowledgments.

It listed the original Hartwell Grand building as marital property assigned to Charles upon formal separation.

Evelyn felt fury rise so cleanly that it gave her energy.

The building had never been marital property.

It belonged to the Marlowe real-estate trust.

Charles had created a paper trail pretending otherwise.

Years of documents.

Years of signatures.

Years of setting up a future in which he could say Evelyn had agreed.

Sophie looked over her shoulder.

"He was planning to leave you for two years?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"Maybe longer."

Melissa looked stricken.

"He told me he decided last winter."

Evelyn looked at her.

"When did your relationship begin?"

Melissa hesitated.

"Last September."

The forged separation agreement predated the affair by more than a year.

So Melissa was not the reason for Charles's plan.

She was another piece of it.

"This was never about choosing you over me," Evelyn said.

Melissa's face tightened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means he was already constructing an exit before he met you."

Sophie looked toward the elevator.

"Why?"

Evelyn thought of the debt.

The missing money.

The forged property authorization.

The 2018 amendment.

The separation framework.

Charles had been building documents that moved control away from her in stages.

"Because he didn't want a divorce," Evelyn said.

Daniel frowned.

"He wanted an acquisition."

Evelyn nodded.

Charles did not simply want to leave his wife.

He wanted to leave with the company her parents built.

Peter's radio crackled.

Security had detained Lorraine Becker in the hotel lobby.

Everyone stared at him.

"Lorraine is here?" Evelyn asked.

Peter looked stunned too.

"She says Mr. Hartwell called her an hour ago and told her to come collect personal files from his office."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"He was cleaning witnesses and documents at the same time."

Evelyn folded the forged separation agreement.

"Bring her upstairs."

Five minutes later, Lorraine entered the conference room.

She looked smaller than Evelyn remembered.

Gray hair.

Navy coat.

A leather handbag clutched to her chest.

Then she saw the document in Evelyn's hand.

Her face collapsed.

"Oh, Evelyn."

That was all she said.

Evelyn knew immediately.

Lorraine had not been fooled.

May you like

She had known.
