Chapter 1 - The Ring She Left Behind

The diamond ring struck the stone ledge with a sharp metallic click.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
She stared at the ring that had once represented every promise Mark had made to her.
Faithfulness.
Family.
Forever.
Now it looked like nothing more than an expensive piece of evidence from a life built on lies.
Her baby slept against her chest, unaware that his entire world had changed in less than an hour.
Behind her, Mark stood beneath the warm lights of the mansion entrance.
His face had lost all its arrogance.
"Please don't do this."
She almost laughed.
He had cheated on her.
He had brought Chloe into their home.
He had admitted that Chloe was pregnant.
And now he was asking her not to destroy the family.
"You already did it."
Mark stepped forward.
She immediately tightened her arms around the baby.
"Don't come any closer."
Something in her voice made him stop.
Chloe remained several feet behind him in her expensive pink dress.
One hand rested dramatically over her stomach.
For months, Chloe had hidden behind smiles, compliments, and carefully rehearsed kindness.
Now the mask was gone.
There was triumph in her eyes.
She believed she had won.
She believed the mansion would become hers.
She believed Mark would forget the woman who had spent years building his life beside him.
But as the betrayed wife looked at Chloe, she felt something surprising.
Not jealousy.
Not rage.
Pity.
Because Chloe had not stolen a prize.
She had inherited a man capable of betraying the mother of his child.
Mark called her name again as she walked toward the driveway.
This time she did not turn around.
At the gate, a taxi waited beneath the orange glow of the streetlights.
She climbed inside with her baby.
"Where to?" the driver asked.
She looked through the window at the mansion one final time.
Mark was standing in the driveway.
Chloe was behind him.
They looked like two strangers trapped inside somebody else's dream.
"Anywhere but here."
The driver pulled away.
Her phone immediately began vibrating.
Mark.
She declined the call.
It rang again.
She declined it again.
Then a message appeared.
Please let me explain.
She deleted it.
Another message came seconds later.
I still love you.
That one almost hurt.
Almost.
She turned off the phone and kissed her sleeping son's forehead.
The mansion disappeared behind the trees.
For the first time that night, she allowed herself to cry.
Not because she wanted Mark back.
She cried because she finally understood that the marriage she had been trying to save had already died long before she discovered the affair.
What frightened her was not losing Mark.
What frightened her was what Mark might do once he realized she truly intended to leave.
And somewhere behind her, inside the mansion, Mark picked up the abandoned wedding ring.
Chloe reached for his hand.
May you like
He pulled away.
That was the first moment Chloe realized winning him might not mean keeping him.
