Chapter 16 - A Life Built With Her Own Hands

Six months changed almost everything.
Her apartment no longer felt temporary.
Photographs covered the walls.
Leo's toys filled the living room.
Paintbrushes crowded the kitchen table whenever orders overwhelmed the small studio.
Her online art business grew faster than she expected.
A home décor company contacted her about licensing several designs.
She reread the email four times before believing it.
Mark had once told her art would never become a real career.
She printed the licensing contract and framed the first page.
Not because she needed to prove Mark wrong.
Because she needed to remember that she had once believed him.
Ethan became part of her life slowly.
Carefully.
He never pushed.
He never tried to replace Mark.
When Mark arrived for visitation, Ethan stepped back.
When Mark was late, Ethan never insulted him in front of Leo.
That mattered.
One evening, after Leo fell asleep, she and Ethan sat on the balcony.
"You know what scares me?" she asked.
"What?"
"Being happy."
Ethan looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because the last time I thought everything was safe, it wasn't."
He nodded slowly.
"I can't promise nothing bad will ever happen."
She smiled faintly.
"That's not very romantic."
"I can lie if you'd prefer."
She laughed.
He continued.
"I can promise that if something is wrong, I'll tell you."
"If you stop loving me?"
"I'll tell you."
"If you're angry?"
"I'll tell you."
"If you're scared?"
"I'll probably pretend I'm not scared for five minutes."
She smiled.
"Then I'll tell you."
Her eyes filled with tears.
Ethan reached for her hand.
He stopped before touching it.
She closed the distance herself.
Their fingers intertwined.
There was no dramatic music.
No mansion.
No diamond.
No promises of perfection.
Just honesty.
And somehow, it felt more romantic than anything Mark had ever given her.
Across town, Mark's life looked very different.
He had sold one of his cars.
The company had cut staff.
Legal bills continued arriving.
Chloe had filed a civil claim against him.
A paternity test eventually identified Jason Keller as the father of her baby.
The final confirmation was almost anticlimactic.
Mark had already emotionally accepted the truth.
But seeing it printed on paper still destroyed something inside him.
He put the result into the same desk drawer as the abandoned wedding ring.
Then he closed the drawer.

Some mistakes could be repaired.
Others could only be remembered.
