Chapter 5 - Chloe Without the Mask

The first cracks appeared within weeks.
Chloe wanted a new SUV.
Mark refused.
She wanted the master bedroom redesigned.
Mark refused again.
She wanted his wife completely removed from the family company's health insurance before the divorce was finalized.
Mark stared at her.
"Why do you care?"
"Because she's draining you."
"She's the mother of my son."
"And I'm the mother of your next child."
Mark rubbed his temples.
Every conversation became a competition.
Every purchase became a test.
Every mention of Leo caused Chloe's face to tighten.
One evening, Mark returned home early.
He heard Chloe speaking on the phone in the library.
"You don't understand."
Her voice was sharp.
"I almost have everything handled."
Mark stopped outside the door.
A pause.
"No, he doesn't know."
Another pause.
"I said I'll pay you after the divorce."
Mark stepped into the room.
Chloe immediately ended the call.
"Who was that?"
"My sister."
"You don't have a sister."
Chloe froze.
Then she laughed nervously.
"I meant my cousin."
"What doesn't he know?"
"Nothing."
Mark held out his hand.
"Give me your phone."
Her expression hardened.
"You don't own me."
The hypocrisy was almost impressive.
For months, she had encouraged him to control his wife.
Now she suddenly believed in boundaries.
Mark walked away.
But suspicion followed him.
Across town, Leo's mother was slowly rebuilding.
She had transformed the apartment's second bedroom into a small art studio.
Before marrying Mark, she had sold illustrations online.
He had dismissed the work as a hobby.
Now that hobby began paying bills.
The first week brought four orders.
The second brought eleven.
The third brought thirty-seven.
Every sale felt like another brick in the foundation of her independence.
Ethan, the neighbor across the hallway, occasionally carried packages downstairs for her.
He never asked intrusive questions.
He never flirted aggressively.
He never treated her vulnerability like an opportunity.
One evening, he saw Leo laughing in the hallway.
"That's a dangerous smile."
She laughed.
"Why?"
"Because he's figured out adults will do anything for him."
Leo reached toward Ethan.
Ethan looked at her before touching him.
"May I?"
The question nearly broke her heart.
Permission.
Respect.
Such small things.
Such unfamiliar things.
She nodded.
Ethan made a ridiculous face.
Leo burst into laughter.
For a moment, she forgot court filings.
She forgot Chloe.
She forgot Mark.
Then her phone rang.
Mr. Sterling.
His voice was serious.
"Mark has formally requested full custody."
The warmth disappeared from the hallway.
"They're claiming your business is unstable."
She closed her eyes.
"What else?"
"They're saying Ethan is an inappropriate influence around Leo."
She stared at Ethan.
"How do they even know about him?"
Mr. Sterling paused.
May you like
"That's what I intend to find out."
Someone had been watching her.
