Chapter 11 - The Records That Broke Him

The financial transfer gave Mr. Sterling more leverage.

Mark's lawyers accused Chloe of unauthorized access.

Chloe responded by threatening to claim Mark had promised her the money.

The scandal began leaking through business circles.

Mark's company partners became nervous.

His father demanded explanations.

His mother stopped answering Chloe's calls.

For the first time, Mark understood what public humiliation felt like.

Then the court approved limited discovery related to Chloe's pregnancy.

Mr. Sterling received the records in a sealed packet.

He read them alone.

Then he read them again.

When his client arrived, he did not immediately speak.

That frightened her.

"What is it?"

He pushed a timeline across the desk.

Chloe's pregnancy had been medically documented before the date Mark claimed their affair became physical.

Not merely days before.

Weeks before.

She stared at the page.

"Then Mark can't be the father."

"The records make his claim extremely difficult to reconcile."

She covered her mouth.

For months, Chloe's pregnancy had been the weapon used to justify everything.

The affair.

The breakup.

The custody fight.

The idea that Leo needed to live with his father and his supposed new sibling.

All of it rested on a timeline that did not survive examination.

"What happens now?"

"We use it."

At Mark's attorney's office, the same records arrived through discovery.

Mark opened the file.

The first page confused him.

The second frightened him.

By the third, his hands were shaking.

He called Chloe.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

He drove to her apartment.

She opened the door only a few inches.

"What do you want?"

Mark held up the papers.

"Tell me these dates are wrong."

Chloe's expression went blank.

"Go away."

"Is the baby mine?"

She tried to close the door.

Mark blocked it with his hand.

"Is the baby mine?"

"I don't know."

Three words.

That was all it took.

Mark stepped backward.

He looked as if somebody had punched him.

"You told me."

Chloe began crying.

"You told me you were sure."

"I was scared."

"I left my wife."

"I didn't make you cheat."

"I destroyed my son's home."

"That was your choice."

Every word was a knife.

Because every word was true.

Mark slowly lowered the medical records.

Chloe wiped her face.

"I loved you."

Mark looked at her.

"No."

His voice was almost inaudible.

"You loved what I could give you."

She slapped the door shut.

Mark stood in the hallway for a long time.

Later, he sat inside his car without starting the engine.

He opened his phone.

There was an old photograph of his wife sleeping beside Leo.

He remembered taking it because he thought they looked peaceful.

He had sent it to Chloe that same afternoon.

Chloe had replied, Someday that will be us.

Mark stared at the photograph until tears blurred the screen.

He finally understood the ugliest part of what had happened.

May you like

Chloe had lied to him.

But he had betrayed his family willingly.
