Chapter 19 - The Wedding Without Secrets

The wedding took place in a garden in early September.

There were fewer than sixty guests.

No reporters.

No business executives invited out of obligation.

No people who cared more about the price of the flowers than the vows.

Mr. Sterling attended and joked that it was the first peaceful wedding connected to one of his divorce clients.

Daniel Reyes sent flowers.

Ethan's parents sat in the front row.

Leo had the most important job.

Ring bearer.

He treated the assignment with the seriousness of a military operation.

Ten minutes before the ceremony, he refused to walk because someone had moved the pillow containing the rings.

The missing pillow was eventually found beneath his chair.

He had put it there himself for protection.

When the music began, she stood at the edge of the garden.

For a moment, fear returned.

Marriage.

Promises.

Trust.

Her hand trembled.

Then Leo appeared.

"Mom."

She looked down.

"You okay?"

She smiled.

"Yeah."

Leo held out his hand.

"I'll walk with you."

Her throat tightened.

Together they walked toward Ethan.

Ethan was already crying.

She laughed when she saw him.

He laughed too.

The ceremony was simple.

When it was time for vows, Ethan looked directly into her eyes.

"I won't promise you a perfect life."

She smiled.

"I promise you the truth."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I promise to choose this family when life is easy and when it isn't."

When her turn came, she took a breath.

"I once believed love was measured by what someone gave me."

She looked at Ethan.

"Houses."

"Rings."

"Promises."

"But you taught me something better."

"Love is what someone protects when nobody is watching."

Ethan squeezed her hands.

They exchanged rings.

Leo clapped before the officiant finished speaking.

Everyone laughed.

Afterward, she stood beneath the lights with Ethan and Leo.

For one brief moment, she thought about Mark.

Not with anger.

Not with longing.

Just gratitude for the lesson she never wanted.

Pain had shown her what she would never accept again.

Across town, Mark received a photograph of Leo wearing his little suit.

His son looked happy.

Mark smiled sadly.

He typed a message.

Tell Leo he looks handsome.

He paused.

Then added another line.

I hope today is everything you deserve.

She read it after the reception.

For a long time, she stared at the words.

Then she replied.

Thank you.

Nothing more was necessary.

Some relationships ended with hatred.

Others ended when two people finally accepted that forgiveness did not require reunion.

She put the phone away.

Ethan reached for her hand.

"Ready?"

"For what?"

"Our first dance."

She smiled.

May you like

"Absolutely."

And beneath strings of warm garden lights, she danced with the man who had never asked her to become smaller so he could feel larger.
