Chapter 15 - The Verdict

The courtroom filled before nine.

Leo's mother sat beside Mr. Sterling.

Her hands were cold.

She had fought for months.

Documented everything.

Answered humiliating questions.

Faced Mark.

Faced Chloe.

Faced the possibility that someone with more money could rewrite the truth.

Now a single ruling would determine how much of her child's future remained within her control.

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

The ruling took nearly thirty minutes.

To her, it felt like thirty years.

The court recognized Mark's parental rights.

But it also recognized Leo's established primary attachment to his mother.

Her stability.

Her consistent caregiving.

Her cooperation with supervised visitation.

The judge criticized Mark's surveillance tactics.

His missed visits.

His poor judgment in involving Chloe in custody decisions.

Then came the words she had prayed for.

Primary physical and legal custody would remain with her.

Mark would receive scheduled visitation.

Initially supervised.

Future expansion would depend on consistency and compliance.

Child support was ordered.

Temporary spousal support would continue according to the financial findings.

She stopped hearing the rest.

Tears filled her eyes.

Mr. Sterling quietly placed a hand on her shoulder.

"It's over."

She shook her head.

"No."

She looked toward Mark.

"It's finally beginning."

Outside the courtroom, Mark approached slowly.

This time, Mr. Sterling did not stop him.

Mark stood several feet away.

"I won't fight the ruling."

She nodded.

"I think that's best."

"I'll show up."

"For Leo?"

"Yes."

She studied his face.

"If you promise him something, keep it."

"I will."

"If you say nine o'clock, arrive before nine."

"I will."

"If you ever use him to get to me again, I will go back to court."

Mark nodded.

"I understand."

He looked down.

Then he said something she did not expect.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me."

She remained quiet.

"I just want to become someone Leo doesn't have to be ashamed of."

For the first time, she believed he might actually mean it.

Not enough to take him back.

Not enough to erase anything.

But enough to hope he might eventually become a better father.

She walked outside.

Ethan was waiting with Leo.

The second Leo saw her, he stretched out both arms.

She picked him up.

He buried his face against her neck.

Ethan smiled.

"Good news?"

She laughed through tears.

"The best."

She looked back at the courthouse.

Mark stood alone at the top of the steps.

Their eyes met.

Then she turned away.

This time, walking away did not feel like losing a marriage.

It felt like choosing a future.
