Chapter 11 - THE FAMILY CHOOSES SIDES

The divorce petition was filed the next morning.
Maya requested exclusive possession of the apartment and a permanent protective order.
She also demanded a forensic accounting of every Caldwell-linked transaction involving my name.
By noon, three relatives had contacted investigators.
The silence at the dinner table was collapsing.
Adrian’s cousin Rebecca claimed she had been afraid to intervene.
Aunt Margaret claimed Eleanor had threatened to remove her from the family trust.
Charles’s younger brother claimed he knew nothing about the forged engineering reports.
Each person blamed someone else.
None admitted responsibility for looking away.
The most useful witness was Adrian’s cousin Daniel.
He managed security for several Caldwell properties.
Daniel delivered a copy of the dining-room footage.
The video showed the entire assault.
It showed Eleanor sliding the transfer document toward me.
It showed Charles pressuring me.
It showed Adrian striking me.
It showed every witness remaining seated.
The footage also captured something I had not noticed.
Thirty seconds before Adrian attacked me, Eleanor leaned toward him.
She whispered six words.
“Make her understand what she will lose.”
Adrian looked at me.
Then he picked up the glass.
The assault had not been an uncontrollable burst of anger.
His mother had encouraged it.
Prosecutors expanded the investigation.
Eleanor’s attorney called the recording ambiguous.
The public did not.
News networks played the silent footage of the family watching me bleed.
Caldwell distributors canceled contracts.
Restaurants removed their wine from menus.
Two banks demanded immediate repayment of loans.
The empire began losing millions each hour.
That evening, Charles asked to meet me through his attorney.
I refused.
He sent a written statement instead.
He claimed Eleanor had controlled the family for years.
He claimed she arranged the surveillance of me.
He claimed she ordered Adrian to marry me.
He also claimed he knew who tampered with my father’s car.
Mercer arranged an interview at the district attorney’s office.
Charles entered wearing a wrinkled suit.
He looked twenty years older than he had at dinner.
“Your mother-in-law did not kill your father herself,” he said.
“Who did?”
“A man named Victor Sloane.”
The name was familiar.
Victor had served as the Caldwell family’s head of security before retiring.
He had disappeared from public records six years earlier.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why should I believe you?”
Charles placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Victor beside my father’s car.
The date printed on the image was the night of the crash.
In Victor’s hand was a small metal tool.
Charles swallowed.
“He was ordered to damage the steering system.”
“Who gave the order?”
Before Charles could answer, alarms sounded in the hallway.
An officer rushed into the room.
“There has been an attempt on Eleanor Caldwell’s life.”
For one terrible second, everyone assumed Victor had returned to silence her.
Then investigators reviewed the estate cameras.

The person entering Eleanor’s bedroom had not been Victor.
It was Adrian.
