Chapter 16 - THE TRUE OWNER

Maya located my mother’s estate records.

The original trust documents were difficult to find because the Caldwell attorney had moved them through three counties.

The documents confirmed Victor’s story.

My mother owned twelve percent of the land beneath the main vineyard and production buildings.

After her death, the interest should have passed to me.

Instead, Martin Vale filed a transfer claiming she had sold it to Caldwell Holdings.

The signature was forged.

The notarization came from a woman who had died before the date listed.

For twenty-one years, the Caldwells had operated their estate on stolen land.

Maya filed a civil action.

We requested an immediate freeze on the property.

The judge granted it within hours.

Caldwell Holdings could not sell the estate.

It could not borrow against it.

It could not transfer its wine inventory.

The entire vineyard stopped functioning.

Eleanor requested a private meeting.

I rejected it.

She arrived at my office anyway.

Security stopped her in the lobby.

She stood beneath the bright lights wearing a black suit and pearl earrings.

Even after everything, she dressed like a woman attending a board meeting.

I agreed to speak with her through a glass security partition.

“You think this is victory?” she asked.

“I think it is accountability.”

“You have no idea how many families depend on this company.”

“You had no concern for my family.”

“Your father threatened thousands of jobs.”

“My father tried to stop unsafe buildings from collapsing.”

“He was idealistic.”

“He was right.”

Eleanor stepped closer to the glass.

“I can give you the vineyard.”

“It already belongs partly to me.”

“I can give you all of it.”

“In exchange for what?”

“You withdraw the criminal allegations.”

“I cannot withdraw a murder investigation.”

“You can change your statement.”

“You mean lie.”

“I mean protect what remains.”

I studied her carefully.

“Did Adrian ever love me?”

The question surprised her.

“Adrian loves himself.”

“That was not my question.”

“You were selected because you were useful.”

“He became attached to you.”

“But love requires courage.”

“My son has never possessed courage.”

For the first time, Eleanor had said something honest.

She opened her handbag.

Security guards immediately stepped forward.

She removed a sealed envelope.

“This is the location of the final account.”

“What account?”

“The emergency reserve.”

“It contains enough money to rebuild everything.”

“Why give it to me?”

“I am not giving it to you.”

“I am offering you a choice.”

“Save the workers or let the government seize every dollar.”

I did not touch the envelope.

“Where did the money come from?”

Her silence answered me.

Bribes.

Fraud.

Stolen investments.

Possibly worse.

“You still think money can transform a crime into a gift,” I said.

Eleanor smiled sadly.

“It always has.”

She left the envelope on the counter.

After she departed, investigators opened it.

Inside was an account number and a password.

The account contained eighty-four million dollars.

It also contained a scheduled transfer.

At midnight, the entire balance would move to an offshore trust.

May you like

The beneficiary was not Eleanor.

It was Adrian.
