Chapter 14 - AUNT MARGARET’S SECRET

Margaret was taken into custody at her home in Sonoma.

She denied being present at the crash.

She claimed the recording had been manipulated.

Investigators found my father’s missing briefcase in her attic.

Inside were copies of the original Caldwell structural reports.

There were photographs of the tunnels.

There were notes connecting shell companies to illegal payments.

There was also a letter addressed to me.

My father had written it hours before his death.

Claire,

If you are reading this, I failed to correct a mistake I made years ago.

I believed silence would protect you.

It only gave dangerous people more time.

The Caldwell family built its fortune on compromised structures, purchased inspections, and fear.

I kept evidence because I knew one day someone would need to expose them.

Do not trust the person who brings this letter to you unless she tells you what happened at the western tunnel.

I love you.

Dad.

Margaret had hidden that letter for six years.

When confronted with the briefcase, she stopped denying everything.

She asked for immunity.

Prosecutors refused.

She offered the full story instead.

Twenty years earlier, Margaret worked in the Caldwell accounting office.

She discovered Charles and Eleanor using false companies to hide construction defects.

She secretly helped my father copy the records.

At first, she had intended to expose the family.

Then Eleanor discovered her involvement.

She threatened Margaret’s children.

Margaret surrendered the briefcase and joined the cover-up.

On the night of the crash, she followed Victor.

My father survived the initial impact.

He recognized her and begged her to help him.

Margaret called Eleanor.

Eleanor ordered her to retrieve the evidence and leave him there.

“He was injured,” Margaret said during her interrogation.

“He might have survived if I had called an ambulance.”

“But you didn’t,” Mercer replied.

“No.”

“Why?”

“I was afraid.”

My fists tightened beneath the table.

“You sat beside me at his funeral.”

Margaret began to cry.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“You introduced me to Adrian.”

“Eleanor ordered me to.”

“You helped them place him in my life.”

“I thought he might truly love you.”

“You watched him attack me.”

Her tears continued.

I felt nothing for them.

“You were given a choice at the crash.”

“You left my father to die.”

“You were given another choice at dinner.”

“You watched his daughter bleed.”

“Fear did not make those decisions.”

“You did.”

Margaret lowered her head.

Investigators charged her as an accessory in the cover-up.

As she was led away, she turned toward me.

“The western tunnel,” she whispered.

“Your father hid something there before he died.”

The tunnel was now partially exposed beneath the collapsed vineyard wing.

Emergency engineers declared it unstable.

No one was permitted inside.

But that night, motion sensors detected someone moving beneath the estate.

Security officers surrounded the entrance.

When the figure emerged, he carried a metal box.

Victor Sloane had finally returned.
