Chapter 15 - THE MAN WHO FOLLOWED ORDERS

Victor surrendered without resistance.

He was seventy-two years old.

His hair was gray, and his left leg dragged when he walked.

The dangerous security chief from the family photographs had become an exhausted old man.

He asked to speak with me before giving his full confession.

Mercer advised against it.

I agreed anyway.

Victor sat across from me inside a secured interview room.

The metal box rested between us.

“You look like your father,” he said.

“I don’t care what you think I look like.”

He accepted the anger without reacting.

“I damaged his steering assembly.”

“I know.”

“I followed him after the crash.”

“I know that too.”

“I was supposed to make certain he died.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Margaret left him there.”

“She did.”

“Did you call for help?”

Victor looked down.

“No.”

“Then you killed him together.”

“Yes.”

The direct answer unsettled me more than denial would have.

“Why did you keep the evidence?”

“Because your father was right.”

“That did not save him.”

“No.”

“It saved me from pretending I was innocent.”

He opened the metal box.

Inside was a small hard drive wrapped in plastic.

“Thomas placed this behind a support beam in the western tunnel.”

“He told me about it after the crash.”

“Why did you wait six years?”

“I was afraid of the Caldwells.”

“You worked for them.”

“I also knew what happened to people who stopped obeying.”

“Why return now?”

“Because the tunnel collapsed.”

“Because Eleanor will have me killed if I remain hidden.”

“And because I watched what her son did to you.”

I stared at him.

“You watched the dining-room footage?”

“Daniel sent it to me.”

“The family believed I had disappeared.”

“Daniel knew where I was.”

Another betrayal inside the family.

Another secret relationship.

Victor pushed the drive toward me.

“It contains the complete financial archive.”

“Not copies.”

“The original encryption keys.”

“With this, investigators can identify every official, inspector, banker, and attorney who helped them.”

Mercer took custody of the drive.

Victor continued.

“Your father discovered something else.”

“The Caldwell family does not own most of the vineyard.”

“What do you mean?”

“The estate was purchased using a development trust.”

“Thomas’s engineering firm invested in the trust before the Caldwell family took control.”

“The original partners were removed through fraudulent transfers.”

“Was my father one of the partners?”

“No.”

“Your mother was.”

My mother had died when I was fourteen.

I remembered her as a school librarian who carefully managed every dollar.

According to Victor, she had inherited a small interest in the vineyard land from her uncle.

Charles and Eleanor forged a transfer after her death.

The Caldwell estate had been built partly on property that legally belonged to me.

The apartment had never been their only target.

They needed my signature because I was the last surviving heir capable of challenging their ownership of the vineyard.
