Chapter 18 - BEHIND THE WALL
Police returned to my apartment.
Investigators scanned the walls and floors.
A hollow space appeared behind the bookcase in my office.
The compartment had been created before I purchased the apartment.
Someone had sealed it carefully and painted over the opening.
Inside were three document boxes.
My father had hidden them there.
The first contained original structural reports.
The second contained photographs of Caldwell officials meeting with inspectors.
The third contained letters addressed to me.
My father had rented the apartment under a company name before I bought it.
Years later, when I expressed interest in the unit, he encouraged me to make an offer.
I thought he loved the view.
In reality, he wanted the evidence to pass into my control without attracting attention.

Samuel was a federal banking regulator.
He had protected Caldwell transactions for more than fifteen years.
He was also the person Adrian called from jail.
Agents arrested him at an airport before he could board a flight to Switzerland.
During questioning, Samuel revealed the final Caldwell plan.
If the offshore transfer failed, the family intended to destroy every remaining archive.
They had placed incendiary devices inside the underground vineyard chamber.
The collapse of the western wing had damaged the trigger system but had not disabled it.
Fire crews evacuated the estate.
Bomb technicians entered the tunnels.
They located four devices.
Three were disarmed.
The fourth was missing.
Security footage showed someone removing it before the police search.
That person had entered my building the previous week using Eleanor’s copied key.
The device was not at the vineyard.
It was somewhere inside my apartment.
